Four swimmers in distress were pulled from waters in West Maui on Wednesday afternoon, but one died in the incident.

While all Omicron cases detected thus far are on O‘ahu, four specimens from Hawai‘i Island and two specimens from Maui contain a molecular clue indicating they are likely Omicron. Whole genome sequencing will be performed to determine if they are Omicron.

So far this year, there were 15 traffic fatalities on Maui County roads, up 87% compared to the eight fatalities recorded at the same time last year. Nine of the fatalities this year were alcohol, drugs, and speed related, representing 60% of all crashes.

The National Science Foundation awarded a $200,000 grant to the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College for a project to study new materials with possible uses in advanced electronics and carbon capture.

NOAA Fisheries has confirmed that Hawaiian monk seal L11 is confirmed to be the victim of an intentional killing by gunshot wound to the head. The young female seal was found dead on Molokaʻi on Sept. 19, 2021. This marks the third confirmed intentional killing of a monk seal on Molokaʻi in 2021 and the seventh on Molokaʻi in the past decade.
