Update: Maui man dies in e-bike collision on Lahaina Bypass

A 62-year-old Lahaina man suffered fatal injuries in a motor vehicle crash on the Lahaina Bypass on Tuesday morning. Police say the man was operating an electric bike and was attempting to travel east across the Lahaina Bypass at the Honoapiʻilani Highway intersection when a black 1999 Toyota Tacoma traveling southbound collided into him.

ACLU demands Hawaiʻi County homeless sweeps stop until safe places are designated

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai‘i issued a letter on June 2 to the County of Hawai’i demanding that it stop planned sweeps of houseless people and their possessions until there is a place for them to go.

Updates/OPEN: Investigation underway into fatal traffic accident on the Lahaina Bypass

A fatal motor vehicle accident has forced the closure of the Lahaina Bypass at the Honoapiʻilani Highway in West Maui. The accident involved a bicyclist and a motor vehicle, Maui police spokesperson Alana Pico tells Maui Now. An investigation is currently underway and there is no estimated time for when the road will be reopened. The closure went into effect at around 8:47 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.

Coconut Rhinoceros Beetles detected on Kauaʻi

Two coconut rhinoceros beetles were found on Kaua‘i, in traps near a green waste transfer station close to the Līhu‘e Airport, agricultural officials said. These are the first detections of CRB (Oryctes rhinoceros) outside of O‘ahu.
