Two Maui men rescued during hike at Haleakalā
Two Maui men — ages 18 and 20 — were rescued while hiking in Haleakalā National Park on Sunday. The alarm was received at 1:10 a.m. when firefighters were dispatched to respond to two hikers who were out of water and cold in the area of the Palikū cabin.

Little fire ants detected in Kīpahulu, Maui
A field crew with the Maui Invasive Species Committee detected a small population of little fire ants (Wasmannia auropunctata) along Hāna Highway near the entrance of the Kīpahulu District of Haleakalā National Park on Aug. 26, 2024. This finding follows the late May detection of little fire ants or LFA at a county storage area on Waikaloa Road in Hāna. Officials say the ants likely spread via contaminated road fill to Kīpahulu within the last year. The infestation appears to be confined to approximately two-thirds of an acre, less than half a soccer field.

A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 791,292 visitors to Haleakalā National Park in 2023 spent $57.5 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 556 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $72.1 million.
Crater Road reopens amid still active 574-acre fire; motorists urged to use caution
County of Maui officials announced today, July 24, 2024, that Crater Road is scheduled to reopen at noon; however, if conditions become unsafe, the road will again be closed. Portions of Crater Road have been closed since July 10 due to the ongoing Crater Road fire in Upper Kula, which remains at 80% containment and 574 acres.

Haleakalā National Park is seeking to lease three- or more bedroom houses or apartments (furnished, unfurnished, or partially furnished) with full kitchens, bathroom(s), and living/dining space to house between two to seven national park employees. Final EA and FONSI published for Pilot Release of ʻAlāla on East Maui
This multi-partner pilot release allows wildlife managers the opportunity to monitor and evaluate ʻalalā and its potential for survival and breeding in the forests of East Maui without risk of depredation by ‘io (Hawaiian hawk). The EA provides background information concerning methods for release of ‘alalā and outlines the proposed action, potential impacts, and strategies to avoid and minimize potential adverse impacts of the project on East Maui.
