Two humpback whales were freed of life-threatening entanglements on Jan. 8 and 9 off the coast of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. These most recent responses bring the total number of humpback whale entanglement cases since mid-December to eight.

Update: (11:50 a.m., Feb. 29, 2024) Power has been restored to a majority of customers affected by an outage in the Mahinahina / Kahana area. The outage was first reported at around 7:40 a.m. By 11:50 a.m., all but 50 customers had power restored. Crews remain on scene where work to complete repairs is underway.

Monday morning a caravan of nurse practitioners, mental health counselors, a psychiatrist and dedicated volunteers arrived in West Maui to support residents in-need from the Lahaina fire.

“I anticipate this meeting to serve as a resource for our community as we investigate various solutions to rising sea levels and accelerated coastal erosion,” said Paltin.

The Maui County Department of Water Supply announced that a 100-foot section of Lower Honoapiʻilani Road will be closed and water service will be disrupted in a limited section of Kahana from 9 p.m. on June 21 to 1 a.m. on June 22

Goodfellow Bros. LLC performs construction along Lower Honoapiʻilani Road for the reconstruction of the Kahana Nui Bridge and underground utility installation. Work will occur approximately from Jan. 3 to September 2022.

A brush fire forced the evacuation and closure of Kapalua Airport this afternoon.

Emergency crews in West Maui responded to a person pulled from the ocean fronting the Sands of Kahana Condominium on Lower Honoapiʻilani Road on Tuesday.

Ocean safety officers on rescue watercraft made contact with the paddle boarders, a male and female couple visiting from Connecticut, and brought them to shore.
