Not wanting to leave Hawaʻ’i for NCAA triathlon during the school year, Chong is starting a registered collegiate club team at the University of Hawaiʻi, open to all campuses which will compete in the Western Conference in spring of 2026.

Aug. 4, the first day of the 2025-2026 school year, also marked the start of the 25th year of education at Kīhei Charter School on Maui.

The July edition of the Kīhei 4th Friday Town Party takes place July 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Azeka Shopping Center Mauka. Guests are invited to enjoy live music, food booths and trucks, and local shopping.

Among the 55 seniors receiving diplomas this year, four standout students were honored with awards for their high school academic success, social achievements and community involvement.

An engine that could potentially power a rocket to Mars and beyond; and a study of how ambient sound can affect the call of a Myna bird and change the way a species produces. These are just two of the award-winning science projects created by two Kīhei Charter School students.

The Kīhei Charter School has announced its 8th Annual Hawaiian Lūʻau benefit fundraiser for the school’s athletic programs. The lūʻau takes place on Saturday, April 5, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the charter school campus located at 650 Līpoa Pkwy., mauka of the Piʻilani Highway.

Kīhei Charter’s open house informational sessions will be held at its campus on March 4, March 8, March 13 and March 25.

Kids at Kīhei Charter School are getting hands-on learning, studying plant life cycles and photosynthesis, researching soil types, experiencing working in a group, and developing responsibility skills as they learn how to care for and water their class garden.

Thirty-nine Hawaii students have earned nominations to US military service academies for the Class of 2029, announced US Sen. Mazie K. Hirono on Friday. The nominees will advance for consideration by each academy’s director of admissions.

Every student in grades K-12 is required to choose a project to work on during the school year and be able to present the findings associated with what they have learned, how the project was developed, and why it was concluded successfully.

Kīhei 4th Friday’s Spooky October Halloween Town Party will take place at Azeka Shopping Center Mauka, the “Heart and Soul” of Kīhei, on Friday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 9 p.m.

A Halloween-themed thriller filmed at Kīhei Charter School will be featured at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Theater this month.

Due to the threat of a Tropical Storm Hone this weekend, as well as anticipated high winds, the Aug. 23 Kihei 4th Friday Town Party has been canceled.

The Kīhei Charter School has announced a significant upgrade of its computer hardware and software using a 2GB platform. According to KCS, it is the only Maui school to use a 2GB system, expanding tech utilization limits for students and faculty.

Maui nonprofit Binhi at Ani will award scholarships to 26 Maui County students in the Class of 2024. The three top-rated students will receive $2,000 while 23 students will receive $1,000.

Kīhei Charter School is extending the registration period for the 2024-2025 school year due to an expansion of the capacity of the school. The first day of school is on Monday, Aug. 5.

This month’s Kīhei 4th Friday town party will take place at Azeka Shopping Center Mauka on June 28 from 6 to 9 p.m.

A total of 21 students within the Maui Filipino community have been announced as recipients of the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s 2024 Scholarship Awards. The scholars will receive at least $1,000 to support their pursuit of higher education.

Four students graduating from Kīhei Charter School have taken on different challenges posed by the Maui wildfires and other statewide issued in their Senior Graduation Defense presentations. Seniors—Taylor Guindon, Tara Zamani, Sundi King and Claire Eller—presented respective projects on wildfire prevention policies, microbe research in the fire aftermath, stories of resilience from wildfire survivors, and an ʻŌhiʻa restoration project sparked by a visit to Hawaiʻi Island.

Deardorff will present “Microbes as Human Indicators of Human Health Risk after the Lahaina Wildfires” to an audience of biomedical professionals at the 2024 National IDeA Symposium of Biomedical Research Excellence (NISBRE) Conference in June.
