Wildfire recovery, the cancellation of the Maui Fair, housing solutions, and election highlights are among the stories that made our list of top features this year. Here’s a recap of some of Maui’s biggest stories in 2024.

County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation announced temporary closures in early December that will impact district offices, permit offices and pools. All County of Maui Parks and Recreation Maui District offices (Central Maui, East Maui, Kīhei, Lahaina and Wailuku), permit offices and Maui pools will be closed on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, for staff training.

After being closed following the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfire, the Lahaina Aquatic Center reopened to dozens of swimmers Saturday, Oct. 11.

Volunteer LeCamieann Shiffler, whom one swim coach called “an angel” who dropped out of the sky, has spearheaded the effort to cleanup the fire debris from the popular pool so it can reopen for the community.

The meeting will feature an update from County Department of Parks and Recreation Director Pat McCall on the status of the Lahaina Aquatic Center. The US Army Corps of Engineers will provide an update on debris clearing.

Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino has allowed the updated West Maui Community Plan ordinance to pass into law today without his signature. The Maui County Council approved the plan on Jan. 14, 2022.

Maui Age Group Swimming Association youth swim meets will be returning to Maui County pool facilities on a gradual, staggered schedule.

Construction begins Tuesday, June 1, 2021, on a shade structure project at the Lahaina Aquatic Center. The Department of Parks and Recreation says intermittent closures are expected while the project is ongoing through Sept. 30, 2021.

Hawaiian Electric has added seven new publicly-accessible, fast-charging stations for electric vehicle drivers on Maui and O‘ahu.

The center was supposed to reopen today for those with reservations for daily lap swimming; however, more debris in the pool needs to be cleared.

The Lahaina Aquatic Center is closed Sunday (Dec. 27) for cleaning of brush fire ash and windblown debris, and will reopen at 9 am Monday to people with reservations for lap swimming.

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has approved Hawaiian Electric’s plan to own and operate four potential EVohana sites on Maui.

The Upcountry Pool, Kīhei Aquatic Center, and Lahaina Aquatic Center will be opened later than normal opening hours on Nov. 15 for staff health and safety training. 

The lower rates are an incentivize for drivers to charge during daylight hours, when solar energy is abundant. 

Registration for the Learn to Swim program for ages five and older takes place at the Lahaina Aquatic Center at 3 p.m. on Sept. 2 to 4.
