MFD announces public outreach event held in conjunction withwildfire training
The course focuses on honing the skills of firefighting personnel as they fight fires in the “wildland urban interface” (WUI), the area where wildland fires begin to impact built up areas and structures. The training will take place from Oct. 6-9, 2026.
New deputy administrator selected for County Maui Emergency Management Agency

Department of Fire and Public Safety announces recent promotions
The Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety announced the promotion of: Jonathan Duncan and Tye Perdido to Fire Captain; Jarrett Sakamoto and Kendall Willing to Firefighter III; Cameron Layer to Firefighter II; and Liane Mickey to Ocean Safety Officer III. These promotions were effective on or before Sept. 16, 2026.
Maui firefighters battle wildland brush fire off of Kūihelani Highway, south of Waikō Road
(Update: 7:15 a.m., Friday, Sept. 18, 2026): The fire that began Thursday afternoon along Kūihelani Highway was 100% contained at 7:30 p.m. last night, after firefighters received assistance from a bulldozer to cut a fire line around the burned area.
Hawaiʻi Water Service awards $37,500 to Maui, Kauaʻi Fire Departments
Hawaiʻi Water Service has awarded nearly $29,500 to the County of Maui’s Department of Fire and Public Safety and $8,000 to the Kauaʻi Fire Department as part of the utility’s inaugural Firefighter Grant Program. These grants will help each county offset the cost of equipment that helps first responders save lives and property and support firefighter wellness.
