Maui forestry and wildlife lands were closed as of 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, 2026. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of residents and visitors, the State Department of Land and Natural Resources had announced a list of closures of camping, parks, lands and trails.
Haleakalā National Park closes due to Tropical Storm Lala
Due to Tropical Storm Lala, both districts of Haleakalā National Park will close this evening— Kīpahulu District at 5 p.m. and Summit District at 6:30 p.m. Sunrise reservations for Saturday, Aug. 15 have been cancelled. Front country and backcountry camping are cancelled for today, Friday, Aug. 14. The park will reopen when it is safe to do so.

Phase 2 excavation contract awarded, remediation continues at Haleakalā fuel spill site
A contract for Phase 2 excavation work has been awarded as remediation efforts continue at Haleakalā. Officials with the Space Surveillance Squadron hosted a community forum this week to provide an update on the status of efforts at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex where a lightning strike and equipment malfunction resulted in the release of 700 gallons of fuel at the facility in January.

Of today’s 166 cases, there are 134 cases identified as confirmed, and 32 probable cases were added to the count. The confirmed cases included: 61 on O‘ahu (+22 probable); 19 on Hawai‘i Island (+5 probable); 16 on Maui (+5 probable); 11 on Kaua‘i; 0 on Molokaʻi; 0 on Lānaʻi; and 27 Hawai‘i resident diagnosed while out of state.
