Most rain gauges across Maui County recorded below-average rainfall in October, according to the National Weather Service’s monthly rainfall summary.

Update: Kona low prompts Flood Watch through Friday night

Update: The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the entire state through Friday evening. A kona low developing north of the state will bring the potential for a prolonged period of heavy rain and thunderstorms over portions of the state from Wednesday through Friday and likely continuing through the weekend.

Maui severe weather updates for Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024: Maui Flood Warning canceled

A Flash Flood Warning is canceled for the island of Maui as of 1:54 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024. The National Weather Service reports that heavy rain on Maui has ended, and flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat. A Flood Watch remains in effect until 6 p.m. for Kahoʻolawe, Lānaʻi, Maui, Molokaʻi, and the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.

Surface trough near Maui County slowly moves west

A surface trough near Maui County continues to bring cloud and shower development over the islands as it moves slowly west through today, according to the National Weather Service. A strong upper-level low to the west is destabilizing the atmosphere, with a Flood Watch in effect for all islands through this afternoon.

Update: Multiple Molokaʻi schools will be closed Monday due to severe weather

The Hawai‘i State Department of Education’s five public schools on Moloka‘i will be closed for students and staff on Monday, Jan. 30, due to impacts from severe weather. The impacted schools are: Kaunakakai Elementary; Kilohana Elementary; Maunaloa Elementary; Moloka‘i Middle; and Moloka‘i High.

Maui Flood Watch until Monday afternoon: A surface trough will continue to bring heavy showers and thunderstorms over Maui County. Flooding has already affected some areas in Maui County and any additional rainfall will quickly flood low-lying areas, according to forecasters.

Strong thunderstorm to impact Molokaʻi through 2:30 p.m., Jan. 2, 2022

A strong thunderstorm will impact Molokaʻi through 2:30 p.m. At 1:24 p.m., Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 6 miles southeast of Maunaloa, moving northeast at 15 mph.

Flood Advisory for Moloka‘i Until 8:15 a.m.

At 5:14 a.m. HST, radar indicated heavy rain over Molokaʻi, especially the southern section of the island. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Moloka‘i Flood Advisory Until 2:45 p.m.

Radar at 11:51 a.m. showed heavy rain falling at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour over leeward Molokaʻi. Additional heavy rainfall is expected through early afternoon.

Flood Advisory for MAUI and MOLOKA‘I

At 5:17 p.m. HST, radar indicated heavy showers showers with rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour over windward slopes of both west and east Maui. Showers are expected to continue into the evening, leading to rises in streams. At 5:34 p.m. HST, radar indicated heavy rain near Kualapuʻu. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour. Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to: Kalaupapa National Park, Pūkoʻo, Hālawa Valley, Kaunakakai, Kamalo, Kawela and ʻUalapuʻe.

High Surf Advisory Issued For Maui, Molokaʻi

Surf is expected to reach 6 to 9 feet today, and lower to 5 to 8 feet tonight.

Flood Advisory for Moloka‘i Until 1 p.m.

At 10 a.m., radar showed “waves of moderate to heavy showers” moving over Molokaʻi from the northwest, producing very low visibility.

Maui Flood Advisory Until 3:15 a.m.

Maui is under a Flood Advisory until 3:15 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, 2020. The National Weather Service reports that at 12:14 a.m., radar showed heavy rain persisting over East Maui near Kauaō and Hāna. Area residents reported flash flooding over the road at Mile 31 of the Hāna Highway at around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Flood Advisory Lifted for Molokaʻi

As of 7:45 a.m., the National Weather Service has cancelled the Flood Advisory that was in effect for the island of Molokaʻi.

Flood WARNING for Maui Until 7:45 p.m.

The highest rain rates were about one inch per hour over the Upcountry region from Hāliʻimaile to Kula. This rainfall is expected to diminish by sunset.
