The man accused of murder in the shooting death of a Maui police officer earlier this month, entered a not guilty plea before Second Circuit Court Judge Peter Cahill during an initial hearing on Aug. 27, 2025.

Flags are being lowered immediately until sunset on Sunday, Aug. 31, in honor of the victims of the acts of violence in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Aug. 27. Flags will remain at half-staff from sunrise on Friday, Aug. 29 until sunset on Monday, Sept. 1, in honor of Maui Police Officer Suzanne O, who was killed in the line of duty on Aug. 15. Funeral services for Officer O will be on Aug. 29.

A Maui judge found that the state has established probable cause to try a man accused of murder in the shooting death of beloved Maui Officer Suzanne O, on Aug. 15, 2025 in Pāʻia. The decision came after two days of testimony from five witnesses during a preliminary hearing, with a detective, an officer and a forensic pathologist testifying on Friday.

Council Vice-Chair Yuki Lei Sugimura invites residents across the county to participate in a light tribute to honor the memory of fallen Maui Police Officer Suzanne O. Participation runs from Aug. 22-29, by turning on porch lights from sunset to sunrise. Whenever possible, residents are encouraged to display blue porch or exterior lights in tribute to Officer O and all law enforcement officers.

The Maui Police Department will hold a candlelight vigil in memory of fallen Officer Suzanne O, on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at the Wailuku Police Station.

Emotional testimony was received Wednesday from a Maui police officer and a caretaker of the Pāʻia Sugar Mill who shared details during a preliminary hearing, of the deadly shooting that took the life of beloved Officer Suzanne O on Friday night.

According to police, Clembert Kaneholani, 38, was being held on several charges including: first degree murder, second degree attempted murder, two counts of a felon in possession of ammunition, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, place to keep a firearm, and owning/possession of a firearm or ammunition prohibited.

Maui police have identified the fallen officer from Friday night’s fatal shooting in Pāʻia as Officer Suzanne O. Officer O began her service with the Maui Police Department in 2020, first working in the Kīhei Patrol District before moving to the Wailuku Patrol District in December 2021. 

The Maui Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own following an officer-involved shooting in Pāʻia, Friday night. Police say the caller reported that an unknown individual had trespassed onto the property and fired a weapon at them. Upon arrival, officers encountered the armed suspect, who discharged a firearm, striking one of the responding officers.

Thirteen individuals joined the ranks of the Maui Police Department as the members of the 91st Recruit Class. They took their professional oaths during a graduation ceremony held Friday, July. 23, at the King Kamehameha Golf Club.
