Clayton Kim says the hospital where his son Brent Kim was temporarily transferred can no longer provide care for his disabled son.

Hawaiʻi Gov. Josh Green said the options for the damaged Upcountry hospital could include a mobile unit designed for disasters or a temporary modular clinic like the one Kaiser built in Lahaina after the 2023 wildfires.

The Kula Community Association (KCA) has formally called on Gov. Josh Green and the State of Hawaiʻi to take urgent action in advance of what is expected to be another challenging wildfire season in Upcountry Maui.

In the pandemic, Maui Health had to run an emergency operations center, set up community clinics, tap into other health care facilities for assistance and communicate better with staff and the community.

The agreement was hammered out in December following a three-day strike. The union wields significant power with 930 members — more than half of the 1,650 employees at Maui Health’s three hospitals.

Maui Health announced the selection of Penny Koval, MSN RN, NHA, as the health system’s new Administrator of Critical Access Hospitals. The appointment took effect on Nov. 1, 2024.  As CAH Administrator, Koval oversees all hospital and long-term care operations for both Kula Hospital and Lānaʻi Community Hospital.

The proposed resolution comes after the recent three-day strike by members of the United Nurses and Health Care Employees of Hawaiʻi held Nov. 4-6. The union maintains that the primary issues remain safe staffing and wages.

Maui health care workers returned to work on Thursday after a three-day strike, conducted in an effort to shine light on issues surrounding staffing and wages.

In the second day of a three-day walkout, hundreds of union health care workers walked picket lines and waved signs Tuesday outside Maui Health facilities in a labor dispute over safe staffing and wages.

Hundreds of nurses and other healthcare workers will walk off the job for three days beginning 7 a.m. Monday, impacting care from essential staff at Maui Memorial Medical Center, Kula Hospital and Lāna‘i Community Hospital. Maui Health released a statement Thursday afternoon that negotiations are ongoing, but it has contingency plans to continue operations if there is a strike.
