Maui Coronavirus Updates

The mandatory 14-day self-quarantine for interisland travelers was lifted today.  The state Department of Transportation reports that the transition has gone smoothly so far.

The series will be conducted monthly via ZOOM conferencing, kicking off on Tuesday, June 23 at 4 p.m.

To honor and thank hospital workers serving on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, Pūlama Lāna‘i has announced it will be gifting complimentary wellness retreats to Sensei Lāna‘i, A Four Seasons Resort on the island of Lāna‘i.

There are 4 new COVID-19 case reported in on Oʻahu today, pushing the statewide count to 740 cases in Hawaiʻi over the course of the pandemic. To date, 637 people (88.1%) have recovered including 113 in Maui County. There are currently 86 active cases. 

A nonprofit public policy organization has filed a federal lawsuit against Governor David Ige alleging his orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic are unconstitutional.

Approximately 150 hand painted colorful and positive signs have been placed at various KS commercial properties on Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi Island.

Chris Tatum, President and CEO of the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority said about 70,000 people are now unemployed that had worked in the tourism industry and their health benefits are at risk. The subcommittee expects tourism will recover slowly because over a third of American travelers say they don’t expect to take a commercial trip until sometime in 2021 at the earliest.

As part of its ongoing Mālama Maui community give back program, Hawaiian Paddle Sports has announced it will offer 100 free surf lessons on Maui for Hawaiʻi residents.

“You’re going to be lining up from the baggage claim side to get to TSA versus from the ticketing side.  Passenger lines will be rerouted so that departing passengers go through to the baggage claim area and then back into TSA towards that check in area,” said Baz.

Governor David Ige is providing an update on the travel requirements for air transportation in Hawaiʻi.  Starting tomorrow, June 16, the state is lifting its inter-island travel quarantine. Joining Gov. Ige is Dr. Bruce Anderson to talk about the new inter-island travel forms and procedures.

Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino today announced a partnership with the Hawai‘i Community Foundation and Hawaiian Community Assets to launch a Financial Opportunity Center to help thousands of residents into housing.

Kīhei Kalama Village is reopening more businesses including bars this week with a “Kau Kau 2 Go” social media giveaway. With the governor’s proclamation bars and restaurants can re-open as long as they do so safely and while following stated safety precautions.

Travelers are encouraged to get to the airport in plenty of time to clear health screenings, which includes submittal of the travel form and a thermal screen. Anyone who does not provide the form or has a temperature of greater than 100.4 degrees will not be allowed to fly. The health information is collected prior to TSA security screening.

The funds are part of a continuing grant and will be awarded to Ho‘ōla Lāhui Hawai‘i on Kaua‘i ($3,067,651), Hui No Ke Ola Pono on Maui ($3,331,410), and Nā Pu‘uwai on Molokaʻi ($2,561,902).

Maui nonprofits are receiving 10 paid positions at no cost to help them with administrative, warehouse, landscaping, and labor through June 21, 2020.

In advance of the reopening of interisland travel in Hawai‘i, on Tuesday, June 16, the state Department of Health has created a new web page, where travelers can download the mandatory interisland travel and health form prior to departure. 

A team of volunteers and staff are readying the Hawai‘i Nature Center campus at ʻĪao Valley on Maui for the return of children next week.

To date, 629 people (88.4%) have recovered including 113 in Maui County. There are currently 82 active cases.
