Hawaiʻi Bankers Association announced today that eight of its members across the state of Hawaiʻi are joining efforts to alert the public about increased phishing scams and fraudulent activity targeting customers’ personal and banking information.

Maui 5K raises $57,000 for Maui Nui schools

Nearly 1,000 participants ran and walked in last weekend’s 12th annual Maui 5K, raising more than $57,000 for Maui Nui schools. The participation from Maui residents and visitors alike marked a record number for the event.

DLNR: Yacht grounding at Honolua caused “significant damage” to live rock, coral colonies

A post-grounding damage assessment conducted by divers from the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources, found that the yacht Nakoa caused damage to corals and reef live rock covering at least 19,434-square-feet, according to state officials.

Budget bill allocates much less to the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority than requested

A team from HP Baldwin High School on Maui has won a trip to Oʻahu to showcase their winning Mikoshi Shrine Design at the Honolulu Festival. The event returns three years after it was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 precautions. 

$10M Kāʻanapali beach nourishment project called ‘waste of tax dollars’ ahead of meeting

Some residents want the state to draw a line in the sand when it comes to how much taxpayer money will go toward costly beach nourishment in Kāʻanapali that isn’t guaranteed to work. “Previous projects have proved to be a waste of tax dollars,” Maui community organizer and Lahaina native Tiare Lawrence said on Wednesday. “There are better and less invasive ways to mitigate sand loss.”

House committee approves $18.9B state budget; prioritizes deferred maintenance, natural resources

Finance Chair Kyle Yamashita (D-12, Upcountry, Maui) acknowledged that the committee’s approach included restoring funding to critical programs that were cut during the pandemic, tackling long standing large one-time funding priorities, and enhancing the state’s ability to withstand an economic downturn by shoring up its reserve funds.

Boats break loose from moorings on Maui; mariners urged to secure vessels

DOBOR was notified of a 45-foot vessel grounded about 50 yards from the break wall outside Lahaina Harbor. The owner has insurance and is expecting to begin salvage tomorrow. A 30-foot sailing vessel is also 30 yards off the breakwater from 1403 Front Street in Lahaina.

Road Closure: Kaʻahumanu Ave. due to downed traffic signal

Maui police have closed Kaʻahumanu Avenue in Kahului between Kanaloa Avenue and Papa Avenue due to a downed traffic signal. Kaʻahumanu Avenue is closed Wailuku bound between Kanaloa and South Papa Ave until further notice. 

Applications available for coupons toward Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program

The program provides low-income seniors with $50 in coupons for fresh produce from Maui farmers markets. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis with about 1,260 coupon packets to be distributed.

Update/Canceled: Maui Flood Advisory until 10 a.m.

The National Weather Service has canceled the Flood Advisory that was in effect earlier today for the island of Maui. The NWS reports that weather radar shows the heavy rain has diminished and flooding is no longer expected to pose a threat at this time.

Maui County condo median sales price sets all-time record at $908,000

Maui County condo prices increased nearly 25% year over year to $908,000, according to a Realtors Association of Maui market activity report released this week. About a third of the condos that sold last month were in luxury areas with medians well over $1 million to $2 million.

Wind Warning issued for Haleakalā on Maui and Big Island summits

A Wind Advisory is in effect for all Hawaiian Islands until 12 a.m. on Thursday. High Wind Warnings have also been issued for the summit of Haleakalā on Maui from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday; and for the Big Island summits through 6 p.m. Sunday.

Hawaiʻi Senate votes 22-3 to advance bill in support of abortion and reproductive rights

Senator Gilbert Keith-Agaran of Maui authored the bill. It allows for licensed physician assistants to perform certain abortions, repealing the requirement that abortions be performed at certain locations, and clarifying that the state shall not deny or interfere with a pregnant person’s right to choose to (1) obtain an abortion or (2) if necessary to protect the life or health of the patient, terminate the pregnancy.

Speed limit reduction along Kaʻahumanu Avenue takes effect March 22

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation notifies Maui motorists of a speed limit change on Kaʻahumanu Avenue (Route 32) between Kainani Street/Lunalilo Street and Mile Marker 1.96 (vicinity of Mile Marker 2). The speed limit will be reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph in both directions. The speed limit signs will be changed on Wednesday, March 22.

Celebrating Prince Kūhiō at Queen Kaʻahumanu Center, March 24

The Prince Kūhiō Maui Ho’olaule’a returns to Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center Friday, March 24, 2023, from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and features free keiki activities, hands-on exhibits, Hawaiian music and hula.
