High school surfers to compete in inaugural World Cup of Interscholastic Surfing at Ala Moana Bowls in July
The Honua Finals will bring together over 120 surfers representing the top high school surf teams from New Zealand, California, and for the first time ever, all four counties in the State of Hawaiʻi. The holding period is July 9-14, 2024 with the contest running on the best two days of surf.

70,080 pounds of marine debris removed from Kuaihelani within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument
A team of 12 from the Papahānaumokuākea Marine Debris Project, a Hawaiʻi-based nonprofit organization, returned to Honolulu, having conducted their first of three marine debris cleanups planned for 2024. The latest mission lasted 19 days, from April 15 to May 3, with crews removing a total of 70,080 pounds of marine debris and cleaning 10.7 miles of shoreline at Kuaihelani (Midway Atoll) in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands within Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.

New Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Specialist Certificate offered at UHMC
Starting this Fall, the University of Hawai’i Maui College will offer a new Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Specialist Certificate. It is a 24-credit certificate of competence that prepares students for a career in the wastewater industry, working to replace cesspools and converting them to more sustainable systems.

Chamber of Commerce Hawaiʻi, in partnership with US Sen. Mazie K. Hirono hosts the 8th Annual Hawaiʻi on the Hill from June 15 to 18. 2023 Hawaiʻi Milken Educator Award recipients presented with $25,000 cash prize at national forum
Following their surprise notifications in April, 2023 Hawaii Milken Educator Award recipients Rory Inouye and Jade Pham received their unrestricted $25,000 cash prizes in Los Angeles during a national forum. Inouye is a math teacher at Waiākea High on the Big Island and Pham is a vice principal and Student Services coordinator at Prince David Kawānanakoa Middle School in Honolulu.

DHHL awards 52 turnkey homes at Puʻuhona in Waikapū, Maui
The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands awarded 52 turnkey homes Saturday as part of phase one of the Puʻuhona Homestead lot awards. Puʻuhona is the department’s first project initiated through the $600 million allocation by state lawmakers in 2022 to support a multifaceted approach to reduce the DHHL Waiting List. Of the 52 homes offered in phase one, three- to five-bedroom homes were made available. Homes range in price from $509,800 to $699,000.

Maui golfers Lakota Lee and Christopher Chung Salem are advancing to the IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championship after winning in their respective age divisions at the qualifying event on Wednesday. They are joined by Lahaina golfer Renner Chumley, the third qualifier from Maui.
