Hawai‘i Island police have identified the body found in the ocean near the cliffs off Old Government Road in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision on Sunday, as 39-year-old Seth Kapiliokalani Waltjen, of Hilo.

Governor Josh Green, M.D. joined the Department of Human Services today in announcing the appointment of Trista Speer to serve as the 2nd Deputy Director for the Hawai‘i Department of Human Services, where she joins Director Cathy Betts, and Deputy Director Joseph Campos II in their respective leadership roles.

The Marine Debris Rapid Response Hotline is meant for the rapid removal of abandoned fishing nets and fishing lines that can entangle and harm Hawaiʻi’s endangered wildlife and coral reefs. The goal of this hotline is to remove the debris before an animal can be entangled and before the net washes back out to sea, which can impact human and wildlife safety alike. The hotline can be reached at 833-4-DA-NETS or reports can be made online.

Nominations for the Community Business, Humanitarian and Outstanding Nonprofit Executive Director awards are being accepted by the Maui County Nonprofit Directors Association.

Hale Mahaolu recently welcomed Joyce Tamori to its Board of Directors. Tamori is currently the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Hawaiʻi Health Systems Corporation, which oversees the State Hospital system. She joins Hale Mahaolu’s 15-member Board that provides fiscal and program guidance to Hale Mahaolu.

Update: A head-on crash early Wednesday morning claimed the life of three people. Maui police have since identified all individuals involved. Police say speed is believed to be a factor in the fiery crash.

Update: As of Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023, Kyler “Kawai” Nishioka Lani, 24, of Lahaina was located.  He was reported missing on Monday by his family. The Maui Police Department thanked the public for their assistance.

A man on Hawaiʻi Island has died from injuries suffered in a dog attack reported Tuesday morning in the Kaʻū District, police said.

Update: 10:18 a.m., Aug. 2, 2023. Makawao Ave. is now open in both directions. It was completely closed on Tuesday afternoon due to a motor vehicle accident between Apana Road and Laie Drive.
