Large Maui Sinkhole: Storm Water Inundates Drainage

A large sinkhole formed on Puʻu Way in Haʻikū, Maui. The 4-6 foot corrugated metal pipes “failed either by collapse or by inundation of debris from upstream.”

Lane Rainfall Marks Third Highest Storm Total in US Since 1950

On Maui, the greatest rainfall totals were at West Wailuaiki (between Keʻanae and Nāhiku) in East Maui where more than 24 inches fell over four days, followed by Puʻu Kukui  (Mauna Kahalawai) in the West Maui Mountains where nearly 15 inches were reported over the same period.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Multiple Landslides on Hāna Highway

There are multiple landslides reported this morning along the Hāna Highway in East Maui at Mile 10, 21 and 23.  Some of the slides were blocking both lanes.

Maui Electric crews continue to work on restoring power to about 4,000 customers in West Maui and pockets of Upcountry, Ha‘ikū and Waihe‘e today after these areas experienced outages due to heavy winds and downed trees.
