2024 Kamehameha Day Parade returns to Kaʻahumanu Ave. on June 15
The 2024 Nā Kamehameha Commemorative Pā‘ū Parade and Ho‘olaule‘a will take place on Saturday, June 15, 2024. Due to the recent fires in Lahaina, this year’s commemoration has been relocated to Central Maui. The parade will proceed down Ka‘ahumanu Ave. and conclude at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center.

Celebration of Life Sunday for former Maui theatrical education director
A former theatrical education director for the Maui Arts & Cultural Center who helped thousands of children on Maui do live performances in schools and attracted hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money, has died. Margherita Therese Pappas passed at her home in Kula on April 23. She was 73.
Kamalei Kawaʻa to sing at homecoming show on Friday
The Grand Wailea has announced the first Homecoming Performance of Maui-native singer-songwriter, Kamalei Kawaʻa, a Grammy nominee and top-20 contestant on NBC’s “The Voice”. The concert will be held on the Grand Wailea’s Molokini Garden on Friday, June 7 from 6 to 10 p.m.

‘ʻUkulele for Lahaina’ project kicks off with Kula ʻUkulele Festival, June 22
The “ʻUkulele for Lahaina” Project announces the inaugural Kula ʻUkulele Festival, a special event as part of the Maui Jazz & Blues Festival series dedicated to providing ʻukulele to families who lost their instruments in the August 2023 Lahaina wildfire. The event will feature some of Hawaii’s top ʻukulele masters and will take place on June 22 from 3 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ocean Organic Farm and Distillery on the slopes of Haleakalā.
40 outstanding honorees inducted into the inaugural ‘Maui Nui Hall of Fame’ at Kahului Airport
The first phase of the “Maui Nui Hall of Fame” was unveiled Sunday evening at Kahului Airport, featuring 40 inaugural inductees from Maui County who have made significant contributions in music, film, and sports in Hawai‘i and beyond. The event drew more than 100 Hawaiʻi icons, government leaders, residents and well-wishers who celebrated the accomplishments, talents and impressive careers of honorees who have left a lasting impact in their respective fields.
2024 Maui Bon Dance Schedule: upcoming Obon season dedicated to memory of ancestors, those lost in Lahaina wildfires
The Bon dance season is set to make its return to Maui this summer. The Japanese Buddhist tradition of Obon, which is held at various temples throughout Maui County, is a community celebration to honor and offer prayers to the spirits of ancestors through music and dance. ‘Chinese in Agriculture’ exhibit celebrates legacy at Maui AgFest & 4-H Livestock Fair 2024
The Maui AgFest & 4-H Livestock Fair takes place today, Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at War Memorial Special Events Field. This year at AgFest, Maui County Farm Bureau (MCFB) honors the legacy of “Chinese in Agriculture on Maui.” The Wo Hing Society presents this free special exhibit from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., outlining the history and lasting impact of Chinese immigrants and settlers. The Wo Hing Society Hall stood in historic Lahaina Town as a symbol of Chinese culture for more than a century before it was destroyed in the fires.
New mural unveiled at Princess Nāhiʻenaʻena Elementary on Maui honors namesake
Princess Nāhiʻenaʻena Elementary unveiled a vibrant mural that students worked on with local artist Noble Richardson on Wednesday. The mural on Building A honors the school’s namesake while incorporating aspects of Lahaina’s history and cultural significance.

Students from the Institute of Hawaiian Music at UH Maui College release a CD of new music for Lahaina
The Institute of Hawaiian Music (IHM) at the University of Hawai‘i Maui College has just released a CD of new music written and recorded by a special cohort of students. Entitled Ha‘ina Ko Wehi: Celebrating West Maui in Mele, the project was supported with a grant from the North Beach-West Maui Benefit Fund and originally intended to create new music for West Maui. However, given the tragic wildfires of Aug. 8, 2023 – occurring just two weeks before the group was scheduled to begin its work – the project’s focus shifted and many students chose to write and sing about Lahaina, its rich history, and their hopes for its future.

Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony to receive $50K grant from the National Endowment for the Arts
The Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony has been approved for a $50,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The grant will support the Hawaiʻi Youth Symphony’s annual Pacific Music Institute summer program, strategic planning initiatives for board members, faculty, and staff, and a neighbor island performance tour for young musicians.
