Maui Election

Midway through Election Day 2020, the lines have been consistently long but manageable at Maui’s Voting Service Center, located at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku. It’s not too late to vote, but you must be in line by 7 pm today.

Kids Voting Hawaiʻi aspires to engage all Hawaiʻi youth in voting at an early age, hoping that as adults they will be engaged citizens. Nearly 1 million students from Hawaiʻi and across the country have cast votes in the Kids Voting Presidential Election.

Today is general election day.  Voters who did not mail their ballot by the recommended date, can still turn in ballots at a place of deposit.  

The Hawaiʻi Disability Rights Center (HDRC) helps residents with disabilities exercise their protected right to vote. The center’s attorneys and advocates work to ensure that provisions in the Help America Vote Act of 2002 are followed as they relate to people with disabilities.

Election Day is less than two weeks away. And, for the first time in a general election, Hawaiʻi is using all-mail balloting. In Maui County, County Clerk Kathy Kaohu said voting is going “smoothly” so far with 27,350 of the 96,882 active registered voters (28.23 percent) already casting their ballots.

The West Maui Taxpayers Association will host a virtual Candidates Night webinar on Oct. 15, 2020 at 5:30 pm with candidates for the following: State Representative District 10, Maui County Councilmember – all districts and Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

“We are opening most Places of Deposit on the same day ballot packages for Maui County voters are scheduled to be mailed out,” County Clerk Kaohu said. “This means in addition to mailing their ballots back to us, voters will also be able to drop off their ballots at our designated Places of Deposit as soon as they have completed their voting.”

In the Hawai‘i State Legislature, HLTA endorsed incumbents Gil Keith-Agaran, Justin Woodson, and Lynn DeCoite to retain their seats, citing their support of the tourism industry on the Valley Isle.

A recount of votes cast in the Primary Election race for the District 13 House seat, confirms incumbent Rep. Lynn DeCoite has defeated challenger and long-time Hawaiian Rights advocate Walter Ritte. Under the recount, DeCoite won by just 93 votes.  Saturday’s tally had DeCoite ahead by just 91 votes.

The fourth summary printout for the 2020 Primary Election has been released.  The fourth printout was issued at 11:44 a.m. HST on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2020. The timestamp on the fourth summary report was at 11:38 a.m.

Maui County residents that have yet to submit their ballots for tomorrow’s Primary Election can do so at drop off locations countywide. Maui also has four voter service centers that provide accessible in-person voting, same day voter registration and collection of voted ballots. 

Members of the Democratic Party of Hawaiʻi have elected Tyler Dos Santos-Tam to be State Chairperson for a two-year term, from 2020-2022.

US Senators Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) led 29 of their colleagues in a letter to Vice President Mike Pence and Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Peter Gaynor urging them to take immediate action to provide Personal Protective Equipment and sanitizing supplies for election and poll workers—and voters—ahead of the November 2020 election.

Registered voters in Maui County may receive their ballot packets as early as July 15. 

The Ha’ikū Community Association (HCA) will host an online Candidate Forum Wednesday July 8, 2020 virtually on Zoom. The meeting will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A 33 member National Delegation has been elected by the Democratic Party of Hawai’i to represent the state at the Democratic National Convention. 

The deadline for candidates to file their nomination paper to appear on the 2020 Election ballot is Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at 4:30 p.m. 

The election results will determine the number of delegates committed to each candidate at the Democratic National Convention.

The Democratic Party of Hawai’i has announced the cancellation of the statewide 2020 Party-Run walk-in Presidential Primary scheduled for April 4th.  Due to the CDC Covid19  pre-cautions and stay-at-home requirements, on-site voting locations for Maui County have been canceled.
