Second Annual Maui Pedal Imua Benefit Ride Raises $17,000
Imua Family Services successfully concluded its second annual Pedal Imua event last weekend netting a profit of $17,000. The 60-mile “gran fondo” tours cyclists around the famed West Maui Loop, and raises funds for Dream Imua, a program that grants child-directed dream days to children in crisis or who have experienced life-altering circumstances.
Dec. 12, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 198 New Cases (153 O‘ahu, 22 Maui, 17 Hawai‘i Island, 5 Kaua‘i, 1 Out-of-State) 2 Deaths
There were 198 new COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Saturday, including 153 on O‘ahu, 22 on Maui, 17 on Hawaiʻi Island, five on Kauaʻi and one in a Hawai‘i resident diagnosed outside of the state. The Maui count today included 10 cases in Lahaina, three each in Kīhei and Wailuku, two each in Kahului and Makawao, and one case in Kula.

Dec. 11, 2020 COVID-19 Update: 89 New Cases (57 O‘ahu, 19 Maui, 3 Hawai‘i Island, 2 Kaua‘i, 8 Out-of-State) 1 Death
There were 89 new COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Friday, including 19 on Maui. Lahaina has the most current infections with 42 cases reported over the past two weeks. Kīhei also has a medium range of infections with 40 cases reported over the last 14 days. Kahului has had 17 cases over the same period; and Wailuku was added to the medium infection range list today with 11 cases tallied over the last two weeks.

Alaska Airlines guests traveling to Hawaiʻi can now gain pre-clearance on the West Coast, avoiding lines and bypassing the airport screening process after they arrive in Hawaiʻi with an approved negative COVID-19 test.

A 72 year old Kīhei man suffered fatal injuries in a moped crash reported Thursday night on the Piʻilani Highway in South Maui.
Latest Turtle Hit by Boat is Euthanized; 22 Boat Strikes in 2020 Raises Alarm
Unfortunately, most sea turtles struck by boats do not survive. This year only one turtle was sent to the Maui Ocean Center Marine Institute for Rehabilitation before being released back to the ocean to live another day.
New Ultra-Cold Freezer Installed at Kaiser as Maui Prepares for Arrival of COVID-19 Vaccine
In preparation for the first shipment, an ultra-cold freezer unit was purchased and installed to receive vaccine allotment for Maui. The freezer can hold up to 200,000 doses of vaccine and will be available to help other health care organizations who need access to ultra-cold storage. The unit can maintain a temperature of -80 and has a real-time monitoring system to ensure safety.

A Wailuku girl is one of 34 kids whose drawings are featured in “The Ickabog” by J.K. Rowling. The fairy tale book is Rowling’s first children’s book in 13 years, since the last Harry Potter book was published in 2007.

A Kahului man was arrested for second degree attempted murder and a contempt of court warrant following a van fire in Kīhei in which a female victim escaped injury, police said.

Office of Hawaiian Affairs Maui Trustee, Carmen “Hulu” Lindsey, was appointed chair of the OHA Board of Trustees today. The vote was taken during the first OHA board meeting since the November elections.
