The state Department of Transportation will be conducting road work this week that will result in lane closures at various locations. Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice. All projects are weather permitting.

University of Hawaiʻi launching space tech development center, student-training hub

The University of Hawaiʻi is in the initial stages of establishing a space engineering and instrument development center at the UH Institute for Astronomy’s facilities on the UH Hilo campus, thanks to general fund support from the Hawaiʻi State Legislature and Hawaiʻi Gov. Josh Green.

CocoNene opens new store at International Market Place after loss of Lahaina store

CocoNene, the local brand known for its made in Hawaiʻi products, has expanded its presence at International Market Place on Oʻahu.  The Waikīkī expansion is part of rebuilding and recovery efforts after the Lahaina flagship store was lost in the West Maui fire in August of 2023. It also comes a month after the grand opening of their new store in Māʻalaea, Maui at the Maui Harbor Shops.

Update/Located: 65-year-old Haʻikū woman reported missing

UPDATE: Michelle Kwik was located and transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for evaluation, according to Maui police.  The Maui Police Department thanked the public for their assistance in locating Kwik, who was reported missing by her family on Jan. 6, 2024.

Compost reimbursement program accepting applications

The Hawai’i Department of Agriculture Plant Industry Division is accepting applications for the Compost Reimbursement Program for Fiscal Year 2024, which may reimburse agricultural producers for the cost of purchasing compost, including transportation costs.

The Federal Aviation Administration is ordering the temporary grounding of certain Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft operated by US airlines or in US territory.

Moratorium on Maui electric disconnections for nonpayment extended through March 5

Suspension of service disconnections for all Hawaiian Electric customers on Maui has been extended through at least March 5, 2024, in accordance with the extension of Gov. Josh Green’s emergency proclamation. Maui customers who are financially challenged by the devastating wildfires will not have to worry about potential disconnection of their electric service, according to the announcement.

DOT: Hawaiʻi ends 2023 with 94 traffic fatalities

“Every year we start with zero traffic fatalities but that doesn’t mean the pain and loss of those dying in avoidable crashes the previous year goes away,” said Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen.
