Leaders act to increase public safety on Oʻahu’s Leeward Coast in response to escalating violence

Gov. Josh Green, M.D., alongside federal, state and county leaders today released statements about a unified effort in response to increased lethal gun violence on the Leeward Coast of Oʻahu.

$4M in federal funding headed to Hawai‘i to recover native plants

Central East Maui wins 5-0 vs. Great Lakes in Little League World Series; advance to Game 22 on Monday against Mountain

The Central East Maui All-Stars won their second game in the Little League World Series on Friday with a 5-0 victory against Hinsdale Little League of Illinois, the Great Lakes regional team.  They are now 2-0 for the series. The Maui 12U boys advance to Game 22 at 9 a.m. HST (3 p.m. ET) on Monday, Aug. 19 against Mountain (Paseo Verde Little League of Henderson, Nevada).

Hawaiʻi United Okinawa Association donates $672,000 to Maui Strong Fund

The Hawaiʻi Community Foundation today announced a monumental donation of $672,076.98 from the Hawai‘i United Okinawa Association to its Maui Strong Fund. The majority of the gift comes directly from residents who donated at various city halls throughout the prefecture, as well as from businesses, and elected leaders in Okinawa. The effort was coordinated by the Yuimaaru Maui fundraising campaign with HUOA’s sister organization Okinawa Hawai‘i Kyokai.

Maui police issue scam alert amid increased spoof calls

Spoofing is a technique used to manipulate caller ID information, making it appear as if the call is coming from a legitimate source, such as a government agency, financial institution, or even a known contact, making it highly deceptive.

EPA protects orders closure of five cesspools on Maui and Hawaiʻi Island

The US Environmental Protection Agency announced multiple settlement agreements and one closure order involving the owners of Large Capacity Cesspools on Maui and Hawai‘i Island. Mani Makai Reserve (DE) LLC, Walter A. Taylor Associates, Inc., Konohiki Corp., Joshua A. Stone Trust and Amy M. Stone Trust have reached settlement agreements and will close their properties’ illegal cesspools in Maui County.

Lahaina Community Land Trust secures first piece of land to steward in Lahaina hands

The Lahaina Community Land Trust (LCLT) has secured its first parcel of community-owned land, that will be held in Lahaina hands forever, for the benefit of the local community for generations to come. The property at 1651 Lokia Street was secured by the LCLT in partnership with The Conservation Fund, a national land conservation organization. Once construction is complete, a homeowner will be chosen through a lottery system currently being developed by LCLT and its advisory board of Maui Komohana community leaders.

DOH reports travel-related dengue case on Oʻahu, brining state total to 11 in 2024

The Hawai‘i Department of Health has identified a new case of travel-related dengue virus case on Oʻahu, bringing the number of total cases to 11 identified in the state in 2024 (one on Kauaʻi, three on Maui, seven on Oʻahu). The affected travelers were exposed in various countries where dengue is common.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has gathered online resources for homeowners, business owners and others to recover from last year’s wildfire disaster and protect themselves in the future.
