ʻIo research expected to provide new insights on the range, behaviors of the Hawaiian hawk

‘Io research is being conducted by the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and is giving conservationists new insights into the majestic birds’ range and behaviors. This is expected to help better plan for future release sites of the ʻalalā (Hawaiian crow) back into the wild on Maui and Hawaiʻi Island.

Update: Salvage plan in development for grounded luxury yacht

The owners of the luxury yacht Nakoa have hired a private contractor to salvage the vessel which grounded nearshore at Honolua Bay early on Sunday, state officials with the Department of Land and Natural Resources report.

County issues emergency permit for removal of private yacht grounded at Honolua Bay

The County of Maui issued an emergency permit to assist in the removal of a private charter yacht that went aground on rocks in the area of Honolua Bay, officials said. The action comes after attempts to remove the vessel during high tide Monday afternoon failed.

Hawaiʻi’s first Sonic restaurant on Maui opens to crowd — and repeat first customer

Hawai’i’s first Sonic restaurant opened today in Kahului to crowds of people, a performance by Sonic owner and award-winning Maui musician Glenn Awong of Maoli, a debut of the chain’s Hawai’i-only teriyaki burger — and new local celebrity Frank Barbosa. Barbosa, who’s from Maui, gained popularity in 2020 when he was first in line at Jollibee’s opening in Kahului. Since then, he’s been first in line at subsequent fast-food openings Chick-fil-A, Raising Cane’s and now Sonic. “I’m 4-0,” Barbosa said.

Silversword recovery effort sprouting on Maunakea

The University of Hawaiʻi reports that silversword seeds first sown at the CMS greenhouse at the Halepōhaku mid-level facility in February 2022 sprouted into more than 100 seedlings under the care of CMS staff and are currently 3-7 inches tall. Plans are to outplant the silversword in a fenced enclosure within the Maunakea Forest Reserve.
