Department of Hawaiian Home Lands awards 100+ agricultural project leases on Maui

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands achieved a significant milestone Saturday by awarding its first agricultural project leases for two subdivisions on the island of Maui. In total, 105 leases were granted: 55 leases for the Waiehu Mauka subdivision and 50 leases for the Honokōwai subdivision.

October trolling dates announced for Kahoʻolawe waters

The Kahoʻolawe Island Reserve Commission has announced limited trolling dates for the month of October in the waters surrounding the island. UH research finds gut bacteria is linked to how genes switch on and off

The trillions of microbes that live in the human gut may play a bigger role in health than previously thought, according to a new research by the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. The article, published in September 2025 in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, explores how gut bacteria interact with human genes in ways that could shape disease risk, aging and even future medical treatments.

Coordinated hunt removes 22 feral animals in Kalalau Valley on Kauaʻi

A successful coordinated animal control operation in Kalalau Valley earlier this month has removed 10 pigs and 12 goats from the rugged, heavily impacted area. The hunt was conducted Sept. 9–10 by a team of permitted hunters working with staff from DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement and the Division of State Parks.
