UH Report: Dime-a-drink alcohol tax increase could raise $58 million and save lives

The state of Hawaiʻi could save lives and raise $58 million in revenue by increasing alcohol taxes by 10 cents per drink, according to a new report by the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Pacific Health Analytics Collaborative.

Sherri Dodson to step down as Executive Director at Habitat for Humanity Maui

Dodson will be stepping down as Executive Director at the end of 2022, and has accepted a new role to continue with its Homeownership Education and Counseling program. Feb. 7, 2022 COVID-19 update: 833 new infections in Hawaiʻi

Todayʻs count includes 92 cases on Maui, 125 on Hawaiʻi Island, 94 on Kauaʻi, four on Molokaʻi, seven on Lānaʻi, and 23 out of state.  There are 488 new COVID-19 cases on Oʻahu.

Maui Charter Commission to host additional meetings on proposed charter amendments

The Maui Charter Commission has scheduled two additional public meetings to hear testimony and deliberate on proposed County Charter amendments leading up to submission of its Draft Report to the County Council on Feb. 18.  The next meetings are planned for Monday, Feb. 7 and Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 9 a.m. online via BlueJeans.

Maui County’s seven day average of cases is now 88.8 cases per 100,000, above the delta peak of 57.6 per 100,000 reported on Aug. 25, but below the 412.1 reported on Jan. 21, 2022.

A 37-year-old Maui was reported missing after he failed to return from a short camping trip. Joseph Wyatt’s vehicle was found unattended at Nākālele Point. His dog was found Friday by nearby residents in the vicinity of his vehicle.
