MPD: Fourth of July weekend impaired driving enforcement announced

Starting Thursday and continuing through the Fourth of July weekend, the Maui Police Department’s Traffic Division will conduct sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols at various locations to address impaired driving.

Continuing through the Memorial Day holiday, the Maui Police Department’s Traffic Division will conduct sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. The public can expect an increased police presence, including using unmarked vehicles.

Holiday weekend kicks off with Hannah Brown Memorial Impaired Driving Awareness Rally and Checkpoint

The sixth annual Hannah Brown Memorial Impaired Driving Awareness Rally and Checkpoint take place today ahead of the holiday weekend. The event begins with a youth sign-waving gathering at 4:30 p.m. at the County Building in Wailuku. That will be followed by an impaired driving checkpoint, made possible with participation from members of the Maui Coalition for Drug-Free Youth, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and family and friends of Hannah Brown.

Maui man arrested after failing to stop at road closure, colliding into parked police vehicle

Maui police arrested a Makawao man after he failed to stop at a road closure on Haleakalā Highway where an active investigation was underway into a fatal motor vehicle accident reported about three hours earlier. The incident ended as the man’s SUV collided into the rear of a parked MPD fleet vehicle.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is providing year-to-date traffic fatality statistics for 2023 as it continues to promote responsible driving habits to keep roads safe. As of Dec. 13, 2023, 92 fatalities caused by motor vehicle collisions were reported statewide. While there has been improvement in overall driving behavior, the number of fatalities by motorcycle collisions has been consistently high for multiple years.

22 Arrested on Maui During Fourth of July Impaired Driving Checkpoints

Maui police arrested 22 individuals for operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. Police also conducted 16 intoxication checkpoints, screening a total of 1,546 vehicles during the three day effort that began on Friday, July 2, 2021.
