Hundreds of Hawaiian Telcom employees spent the day volunteering for various community service projects statewide on Friday as part of the company’s annual “Day in the Community.” Volunteers on Maui participated in a cleanup of Kanahā Beach Park in Kahului as part of the effort.

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation notifies the public that a training exercise will be conducted at the Kahului Airport from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 20. The Kahului Airport Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighters will conduct an emergency training exercise that tests the response to a simulated aircraft incident on a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. The exercise is a requirement by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Flooding and ground conditions have caused the closure of Baldwin Beach Park, Kalepolepo Beach Park, Kepaniwai Park, and the third entrance to Kanaha Beach Park. Restrooms at Kanaha Beach Park are closed until water service is restored. The Cooke Memorial Pool on Molokaʻi is also closed today.

Ocean Safety crews on Maui used rescue watercraft to make multiple rescues Wednesday as an XL swell peaked along the north and west facing shores.

The trash included bottle caps, cigarette butts, wrappers, broken water balloons and other remnants of a party in the park as planes landed at nearby Kahului Airport.

County parks that remain closed today include: Ka‘a Point at Kanahā Beach Park, Kēōkea Park, Waihe‘e Beach Park, and Kalepolepo Park.

The county led cleanup effort of ‘Āmala Place in Kahului resulted in the removal of 58 tons of solid waste and 54 derelict vehicles this week, but not all are happy with the process and its impact on the unsheltered homeless individuals who were living in area encampments.

On Monday, Lt. John Yamamoto of the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement and his officers posted a half dozen camps in the bushes next to the beach, warning people they’d need to move today. State officials say the crews encountered at least two illegal campers who were told to leave before the contract crews and heavy equipment moved in.

County and state crews continue response to storm-related impacts at several locations across the island.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for all islands until 6 p.m. today. Although a warning was lifted, road and park closures continue.

The third entrance to Kanahā Beach Park is closed today (Feb. 3, 2021) because of a waterline break.

The 45-year-old Wailuku man was located outside the surf zone by Ocean Safety crews aboard Jet Ski 10.  Department officials report the kayak was filling with water amid rising large surf.  

Maui County Addresses Illegal Encampments at Kanahā Beach Park: County officials say the encampments are negatively impacting the beach, nearshore waters and wetlands.

The Kaʻa Point parking lot at Kanahā Beach Park is closed due to heavy rains that caused flooding.

The public is advised of a water quality exceedance of enterococci at Kanahā Beach, Maui, according to the Department of Health Clean Water Branch.

A windsurfer who had collapsed at Kanahā Beach Park in Kahului on Maui was transported to the hospital after regaining a pulse.

Maui police have since identified the man as 77-year-old Frank Beecher Wooding of Haʻikū.

County crews worked to address homeless encampments Thursday morning at Kanahā Beach Park on Maui. Notices to vacate were reportedly issued on May 17.

Kanahā Beach Park in Kahului will be closed from 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, to 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 31, for park maintenance, repairs and cleanup.

The standards are aimed at providing mauka to makai streamflow for native stream animals and traditional and customary practices at Kahoma and Kanahā streams.
