Kona storm begins lifting: Flood Watch, Wind Advisory continue for Maui, Wind Warning for Haleakalā
The large and powerful kona storm that has been slowly moving across the Hawaiian Islands, is expected to begin lifting northeastward today into Monday, with heavy rain and strong winds easing across the state, according to the National Weather Service. However, periods of unsettled wet weather in a light and variable low level wind pattern will continue across the state through next week.
High Wind Watch until Sunday afternoon for Haleakalā and Big Island summits
The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for Haleakalā on Maui and Big Island summits from Thursday evening until Sunday afternoon. The forecast calls for wind from the southwest blowing at 45-65 mph with gusts up to 85 mph possible.
Maui and Hawaiʻi Island urged to prepare for potential Public Safety Power Shutoffs
With a wind advisory in effect through 6 p.m., Hawaiian Electric will continue to closely monitor weather conditions throughout the night. High wind gusts and low humidity may lead to increased risk for wildfires, particularly in West Maui and in the North and South Kohala areas of Hawaiʻi Island, and may require a Public Safety Power Shutoff within the next 12 to 24 hours.
Public Safety Power Shutoff watch: Hawaiian Electric monitoring wildfire risk conditions this week
Hawaiian Electric is monitoring developing weather conditions which are likely to lead to an increased risk of wildfires in parts of Maui County and Hawaiʻi Island later this week. Customers in these areas are urged to initiate their own emergency plans should a Public Safety Power Shutoff be necessary, and to prepare for the possibility of extended power outages Monday through Thursday.
Hawaiian Electric ends Public Safety Power Shutoff watch; Crews continue to restore power to weather-related outages
As of 8 a.m. today, about 300 customers on Oʻahu and 2,000 customers on Maui remain without electricity. Crews have also been addressing pocket outages on Hawaiʻi Island.
Hawaiian Electric monitoring wildfire risk conditions
At this time, Public Safety Power Shutoff is in a “watch” condition, meaning that if weather conditions intensify in the next 24 to 48 hours Hawaiian Electric may proactively shut off power in communities with high exposure to wildfire risk.
50 mph wind gusts in forecast; Wind Advisory until 6 p.m. Saturday
A Wind Advisory is now in effect until 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025. The National Weather Service is forecasting northeast to east winds, blowing at 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning for Lānaʻi and portions of Hawaiʻi Island as a cold front continues to push south of the Big Island this morning.

The forecast calls for easterly trade winds of 15 to 30 mph with localized gusts over 50 mph. The National Weather Service has extended a wind advisory for portions of Maui and Hawaiʻi Counties through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for all Hawaiian Islands until 12 a.m. on Thursday. High Wind Warnings have also been issued for the summit of Haleakalā on Maui from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday; and for the Big Island summits through 6 p.m. Sunday.
High Wind Watch in effect Tuesday through Friday atop Maui and Big Island summits
A High Wind Watch will go into effect on Tuesday morning, and remain in place through Friday afternoon for the summits of the Big Island and for Haleakalā on Maui.

A High Wind Warning has been extended until 6 a.m. Thursday for the Kohala district of the Big Island. A Wind Advisory has been extended until 6 a.m. Thursday for Maui County, Oʻahu, Kauaʻi and parts of the Big Island.
Wind Warning for Oʻahu, Advisory for Haleakalā, Mauna Loa and Maunakea
The forecast calls for northeast winds of 20-35 mph with localized gusts of up to 50 mph on Kauaʻi, Niʻihau, windward Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Maui and portions of Hawaiʻi Island. The advisory remains in effect through Friday evening.

Strong northeast winds and significant north swell possible on Thanksgiving
Strong northeast winds are expected to develop after a cold front passes, potentially resulting in a period of very windy conditions. Additionally, a powerful low pressure system passing north of the area will generate a large north swell that will build Wednesday night, with the peak of the swell potentially coinciding with extreme high tides Thursday and Friday mornings.
