Haleakalā National Park’s Solar Festival, March 16-18

Haleakalā National Park celebrates the 2023 Solar Festival from Thursday, March 16 through Saturday, March 18. The public is invited to visit the “House of the Sun” to explore methods of daytime astronomy and learn about our closest star.

Excavation starts at site of fuel spill atop Haleakalā

Excavation for cleanup of the Haleakalā fuel spill site began March 2, 2023, at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex following approval of a work plan. The Pacific Air Forces reports the excavation was delayed due to inclement weather at the summit.

Pentagon official embarrassed by Haleakalā fuel spill on Maui; contract secured for excavation

A contract has been secured to excavate the contaminated soil around a generator at the summit of Haleakalā where an estimated 700 gallons of diesel fuel spilled at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex late last month. Wind Warning for Oʻahu, Advisory for Haleakalā, Mauna Loa and Maunakea

The forecast calls for northeast winds of 20-35 mph with localized gusts of up to 50 mph on Kauaʻi, Niʻihau, windward Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Maui and portions of Hawaiʻi Island. The advisory remains in effect through Friday evening.
