Cold front to slow and dissipate across Maui County with gusty showers, period of rain

Gusty showers, some briefly heavy at times are expected on Maui as clouds and showers associated with a front push through the islands today. The wet weather will impact Oʻahu this morning, spreading to Maui County today, according to the National Weather Service.

Large swell to peak today at 30 feet

The National Weather Service says a large west-northwest swell building down the island chain will peak today, then slowly ease tonight through Monday.

Rare high-altitude ‘rainbow clouds’ make appearance over Big Island

East Hawai‘i was treated to a colorful show Tuesday evening as the sun set and into dusk with the appearance of rare wispy-like noctilucent clouds. The iridescent clouds thrilled and captivated those who saw them, in person and in photos on social media, hovering through the upper atmosphere.

Cold front brings gusty winds and bouts of rainfall

A front rapidly approaching Kauaʻi from the northwest will move down the island chain today and tonight, delivering gusty west to northwest winds, brief bouts of heavy rainfall, and cool conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

High Surf Advisory, Coastal Flood Statement for Niʻihau, Kauaʻi and Oʻahu

A High Surf Advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday for the north and west facing shores of Niʻihau, Kauaʻi and Oʻahu. There is also a Coastal Flood Statement in effect from tonight through early Saturday morning.

Update: Tornado Warning canceled for Molokaʻi, Flood Advisory until 11:30 p.m., Jan. 8, 2024

The Hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency reports that the Tornado Warning that was in effect for Molokaʻi through 7:45 p.m. has since been canceled, but the public is advised to be aware of changing weather conditions this evening.

Cold front near Kauaʻi continues path down island chain through Tuesday

A Flood Watch is in effect through Tuesday afternoon as a cold front makes its way down the island chain.

Cold front to impact Hawaiʻi from late Sunday through Tuesday, Flood Watch issued

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for all Hawaiian Islands from Sunday evening through Tuesday afternoon.

High surf warning in effect for north-facing shores of Maui

For most of Hawaiʻi, surf will build to 20 to 30 feet along north-facing shores and 15 to 20 feet along west-facing shores.

Second XL swell to keep High Surf Warning posted until 6 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29

Surf is expected to be in the 20-30 foot range along the north facing shores, and up to 18-22 feet along affected west facing shores today.  The swell will have a brief decline tonight, but a second extra-large NNW swell will fill in on Thursday, bringing surf as high as 35 feet to the north shores. 

November’s Kona low brought flash flooding, some relief to drought conditions on Maui

Due to the severity of the drought in some areas of the state, additional significant rain events will be needed for full drought recovery, which is not likely within the winter months due to the ongoing strong El Niño event. 

Update: High surf advisory for Maui until 6 a.m. Sunday

The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for north-facing shores of Maui until 6 a.m. Saturday.

Red Flag Warning until 6 p.m. for leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Red Flag Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today for the leeward areas of all Hawaiian Islands.

Wind Advisory extended, gusts of over 50 mph forecast

The forecast calls for easterly trade winds of 15 to 30 mph with localized gusts over 50 mph. The National Weather Service has extended a wind advisory for portions of Maui and Hawaiʻi Counties through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Update: Red Flag Warning for leeward areas of all islands due to gusty winds, low humidity

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Red Flag Warning for wind and low relative humidity, which is in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday to 6 p.m. HST Monday. This replaces the Fire Weather Watch that had been issued earlier.

Minor coastal flooding expected during high tide through Thursday

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood statement for the all Hawai’i islands for low-lying coastal areas due to higher than normal tides through Thursday.

Maui County sues Hawaiian Electric Company for civil damages caused by wildfires

Today, the County of Maui filed a lawsuit against Maui Electric Company, Hawaiian Electric Company, Hawaiʻi Electric Light Company and Hawaiian Electric Industries for civil damages allegedly caused to the County’s public property and resources as a result of recent Maui fires, including fires in Lahaina and Kula.

High winds knock down utility poles on Kamehameha V Hwy. on Molokaʻi

Kamehameha V Highway on Molokaʻi is closed between Mile 8.5 and 10 due to two utility poles knocked down from high winds. There is no estimated time on when the road will reopen.

The National Weather Service reports that Calvin will likely impact the state beginning next Tuesday, with the potential for windy and wet weather mid week. Hawaiʻi’s synopsis indicates that it’s still too early to forecast details.
