Maui Crime Jan. 16-22, 2022: Burglaries, Break-ins, Thefts

Maui police responded to four burglaries, 19 vehicle thefts and six vehicle break-ins in Maui County over a seven day period from Jan. 16 to 22, 2022.

Maui Crime Jan. 9-15, 2022: Burglaries, Break-ins, Thefts

The percentage of burglary cases increased 60% from the week before when five incidents were reported. Vehicle thefts increased 119% from the week before when 16 incidents were reported. Vehicle break-ins decreased 67% from the week before when 21 incidents were reported.

The percentage of burglary cases increased 20% from the week before when 10 incidents were reported. Vehicle thefts increased 22% from the week before when nine incidents were reported. Vehicle break-ins decreased 8% from the week before when 12 incidents were reported.

The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency are working to investigate the cyber-attack against the operator of the City and County of Honolulu’s systems managing TheBus and TheHandi-Van.

The percentage of burglary cases decreased 9% from the week before when 11 incidents were reported. Vehicle thefts decreased 31% from the week before when 13 incidents were reported. Vehicle break-ins increased 71% from the week before when seven incidents were reported.

Operation Keiki Shield: Six Alleged Offenders Arrested and Charged on Maui

Six individuals were arrested and charged during the state’s Operation Keiki Shield 10 enforcement effort that was conducted between Friday and Sunday, Dec. 3-5, 2021 on Maui. All six are accused of first degree Electronic Enticement of a Child.

The Maui Police Department issued 554 citations last week during the Operation Speed Jam enforcement effort. The campaign, which began on Nov. 8, 2021, netted 354 citations for speeding, 10 excessive speeding violations, and 76 citations for speeding in a school zone.

The percentage of burglary cases decreased 30% from the week before when 10 incidents were reported. Vehicle thefts increased 100% from the week before when five incidents were reported. Vehicle break-ins increased 129% from the week before when seven incidents were reported.

Adoptive Parents Arrested for Murder in Disappearance of Isabella “Ariel” Kalua

“Based on the investigation conducted by the Homicide Detail, we believe that Ariel was murdered sometime in the middle of August 2021 by her adoptive parents Lehua and Isaac Kalua. It’s worth noting this time element is a full month before Ariel was reported to police as a missing person. The cause of Ariel’s death is still under investigation… “
