The Honoapiʻilani Hwy is now OPEN in both directions as of 2:11 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018. It was closed earlier this afternoon following a motor vehicle accident in the Māʻalaea/Waikapū area. Expect delays as traffic resumes its normal flow.

Although initial reports indicated that both individuals were in their 20’s, Maui police released information today saying the man was 40-years-old and the female was 37-year-old. Police say both appear to have been visitors from the Republic of Korea.

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs issued a statement today saying it is “appalled” by the Chicago-based Aloha Pokē (sic) Company’s recent attempts to “assert control over ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi,” the traditional language of the native people of Hawaiʻi.
Active Brush Fire in Upper Kanaio, 15 Acres Burned
Maui fire crews are currently on scene of a brush fire in the upper Kanaio area. The fire is approximately 15 acres in size and moving in thick brush with strong winds being reported.
