Meetings slated for soon-to-launch Hoʻokumu Hou programs for Maui wildfire survivors

The County of Maui Office of Recovery will be hosting a series of community meetings on July 30 and Aug. 1, 2025, leading up to the opening of Hoʻokumu Hou program applications on Aug. 11. Newly named Hoʻokumu Hou, which will cover all of the County’s recovery programs funded by federal Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds, will focus on housing initiatives intended to help wildfire survivors receive the means they need to stay, or return, home.

Ka Ipu Kukui’s youth program celebrates 6th cohort; Now recruiting Lāna‘i participants

Ten high school students from Maui recently completed the 2025 programming of Stay Maui Nui, a youth career exploration and leadership program developed by the Ka Ipu Kukui Fellows. Held June 23–27, the week-long program offered students opportunities to explore career pathways, develop leadership skills, and deepen their connection to Maui through site visits, workshops, and mentor engagement.

UPDATE: Police recover bodies of 2 women from within downed banyan tree in Hilo

The women were extricated from deep within the tangled debris of the downed banyan tree, which fell the afternoon of July 12 on Kilauea Avenue, with preliminary observations indicating they were likely struck by falling tree limbs; police do not suspect foul play at this time and autopises will be conducted later this week to determine their exact cause of death.
