A Kula man was arrested and held on $755,000 bail for allegedly opening fire at a Haʻikū home on Monday afternoon. Police say 55-year-old Shawn Medeiros allegedly shot numerous rounds at the home before fleeing.

Hawaiʻi DOH expands monkeypox vaccine eligibility, reports four more cases

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health is reporting four additional monkeypox cases in Hawaiʻi and is expanding JYNNEOS vaccination eligibility for prevention of monkeypox. This brings the total number of cases reported in Hawaiʻi since June 3 to 16.

New PARK MAUI program would charge visitors to park at Maui’s most visited areas

“PARK MAUI is one of the ways in which the County of Maui can help to restore balance between our community and our hospitality industry,” said Mayor Victorino. “Our vision is to ensure residents have free access to shorelines, beaches and parks while non-residents pay to park in these places. The revenue generated by this program will fund operational expenses and may also be used to fund facility improvements, cultural preservation, environmental protection, and beach restoration efforts.”

Man charged after reports of SUV following and threatening female pedestrians in West Maui

Maui police have identified two “individuals of interest” after two suspicious reports Saturday night in which female pedestrians were reportedly followed by an SUV in West Maui, and threatened. In one case, the driver claimed to have a gun; and in the other incident, a gun was pointed at the victim, police said.

9 acres of brush burned in Kahului fire near Hoʻokele Street, now 100% contained

Maui fire crews were called to an afternoon brush fire off of the Hāna Highway in Kahului at around 12:30 p.m. The fire was reported in the vicinity of Hoʻokele Street behind the Safeway grocery store.

Aug. 4-10, 2022 COVID-19 update: 14 deaths, 3,189 new infections in Hawaiʻi

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health reported 3,189 new COVID-19 cases for the week of Aug. 4-10, 2022, which is 500 less cases than the previous week. This is well below the recent peak of 8,924 new infections reported during the week of May 19-25, 2022. There were 14 COVID-19 deaths this week, seven less than last week. 

Earthquake swarm in American Samoa’s Manuʻa islands

“If activity escalates to an eruption, it will most likely include slow-moving lava flows or low-level explosions of lava that are localized to a small area. An eruption like Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai in Tonga earlier this year is extremely unlikely as it is a different type of volcano. Volcanoes in Tonga erupt much more explosively than ones in American Samoa and Hawaiʻi,” according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
