Hawaiʻi Youth Poet Laureate to be announced

More than a dozen young poets statewide will be presenting their works at a competition to select the Hawaiʻi Youth Poet Laureate this year.

High school juniors Cailyn Omuro of Maui High School and Sophia Salvador of Kīhei Charter School were selected in a juried process as the winners of START, a community-based artist immersion for young aspiring artists.

Merrie Monarch Festival 2022 Results: Kauaʻi hālau wins overall; Maui sweeps kāne divisions

Hulō! to the Hālau from Kauaʻi! Hālau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leinā‘ala took the overall title at the 59th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival. From Maui, the seven men of Hālau Kekuaokalā‘au‘ala‘iliahi, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes of Wailuku, swept first place honors in both the kāne kahiko and kāne ʻauana divisions. The women of Kekuaokalā‘au‘ala‘iliahi earned second place honors in the wahine kahiko division.
