Power remains on in communities with high exposure to wildfire risk. However, Hawaiian Electric continues to monitor the threat from high winds and dry conditions. The company may proactively shut off power in Public Safety Power Shutoff areas on Maui and Hawaiʻi Island as part of its PSPS program, which continues in a watch condition that started on Saturday.

MISC: ʻŌhiʻa seeds from resilient trees may hold the key to stopping Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death

Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death (ROD) was detected in three landscaped ʻōhiʻa trees in Central Maui in February. ROD is a fungal disease that can kill a healthy ʻōhiʻa tree. First identified in Puna in 2014, the disease has since devastated thousands of acres of forest on Hawaiʻi Island, wiping out over a million trees.

2025 Fourth of July Makawao Stampede results

Eleven year old Luana Fitch won the Junior Barrel competition at the Makawao Stampede rodeo, held over the weekend at the Oskie Rice Event Center. Her combined times (18.85 sec and 18.83 sec) in the junior event would have beat the open women’s championship times for the same category. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the parts of Maui, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, and the Big Island of Hawaiʻi through 6 o’clock tonight.

8:30 a.m. Update: Public Safety Power Shutoff restoration completed for 330 Upcountry Maui customers

Hawaiian Electric has restored electricity to all affected customers, about 330 in parts of Upcountry Maui, impacted by its Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program. Overnight crews and additional personnel who have been working since 6 a.m. completed inspections of the circuits enabling all customers to be restored. If hazardous conditions suddenly return, it may be necessary to shut off the power in identified PSPS areas on Maui and Hawai‘i Island to reduce the risk of a wildfire.
