Hawai‘i Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopters support state with emergency medical flights

Governor Josh Green, M.D. authorized the emergency use of the National Guard MEDEVAC helicopters and the select crews to temporarily support the Hawaiʻi Life Flight/Global Medical Response safety stand down after a medical transport flight went missing in waters off of East Maui last week.

Animal fostering sought for shelter pets during the Holidays

Fostering for the Holidays at Maui Humane Society started Dec. 15 and runs through Jan. 2, 2023. It allows any member of the public to take an animal home for the holidays for free, with all supplies provided. They can call or walk through the front doors of the Maui Humane Society, and let staff know they are interested in the free, life-saving opportunity to Foster for the Holidays.

Hazardous conditions prompt closure of Waihou Spring Forest Reserve on Maui

Due to hazardous conditions caused by impacts from this week’s kona low storm, the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife has closed the Waihou Spring Forest Reserve on Maui.

Repairs continue to restore power to areas with pocket outages on Maui and Molokaʻi

Haleakalā National Park Summit District reopens, snow melts

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park reopened at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022. The Headquarters Visitor Center at 7,000 feet remained open until 4 p.m. The Haleakalā Visitor Center at 9,740 feet remains closed however the parking lot and restrooms are open.  

Happening Tonight: Another night closure of Piʻilani Highway starts at 10 p.m., Dec. 21

The state Department of Transportation will conduct another full nighttime closure of the Piʻilani Highway–this time between Kaonoulu Street and Piʻikea Avenue–from 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, through 5 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022. The closure is being done so that workers can complete the permanent striping of the northbound lanes in the Kīhei Roundabout work zone.

Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge brings back “Saturdays at the Refuge”

In response to the Maui community’s desire to increase access to the refuge, the Keālia Pond Visitor Center is now open one Saturday each month for its “Saturdays at the Refuge” event.

Video shows snow atop Haleakalā; Summit reopens

An accumulation of snow was observed along the roadsides near the summit of Haleakalā Tuesday. The observation was made after the most severe impacts from a kona low storm system passed over the state, bringing with it hazardous conditions to the mountaintop in recent days. Tonight’s forecast (Dec. 20, 2022) calls for lows near 35 °F with isolated showers and damaging winds.
