Maui traffic advisories, Sunday, March 22: Multiple road closed due to flooding, sinkhole in Lahaina

Travel on Hāna Highway into East Maui is limited to emergency vehicles, essential workers and local traffic due to ongoing repair work and dangerous conditions. MPD has checkpoint enforcement from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily on Hāna Highway. Haleakalā National Park’s summit remains closed, according to the National Park Service. The public is urged not to attempt travel into these areas until further notice. Below is an ongoing list of traffic advisories:

Puʻunēnē Avenue night closures start March 10 in Kahului

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation will close Puʻunēnē Avenue between Wākea Avenue and West and East Kauaʻi streets for two nights starting March 10 to allow crews to do traffic signal work.

The state Department of Transportation will be conducting road work this week that will result in lane closures at various locations. Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice. All projects are weather permitting.

Nighttime closures on Honoapiʻilani Highway in Ukumehame

From 10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27 to 3:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 28, there will be intermittent holds of traffic of around 10 minutes on the highway in Ukumehame. The traffic holds will allow crews to replace and adjust the barriers on the makai shoulder of the highway.

Paving and striping work to close Puʻunēnē Avenue at night next week

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is notifying the public that night lane and road closures are planned next week on Puʻunēnē Avenue between Wākea Avenue and Kūihelani Highway.

Update: Parts of Makawao Ave. to be closed on weekends until March 22, 2026

A County of Maui Department of Public Works reconstruction project that was scheduled to close both lanes on portions of Makawao Avenue, is being delayed to start Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, due to the potential for rain this weekend.

Traffic signal upgrades to close lanes at Kahului intersection

Motorist and road users are advised that lanes will be closed overnight at the Puʻunēnē Avenue (Route 3500) and the West and the East Kamehameha Avenue intersection, Friday night into Saturday.  

Maui lane closures for the week of Feb. 14-20

The state Department of Transportation has multiple lane closure scheduled on Maui for the week of Feb. 14-20, 2026. There will be no lane closures on Monday, Feb. 16 in observance of Presidents’ Day, unless permitted Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice. All projects are weather permitting.

Puʻunēnē Avenue night closures to switch over traffic signals

Due to the inclement weather, night work scheduled for this week has been postponed to the week of Feb. 17-20. 

West Maui traffic patterns to be altered due to power shut off 

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is notifying the public that adjustments will be made to traffic patterns in West Maui as the public safety power shut off by Hawaiian Electric continues.

Kahului intersection traffic lights blinking until repaired

Kahului traffic lights on the neighborhood roadway intersection of Wākea and Kamehameha avenues are blinking due to an electrical issue, according to County of Maui Department of Public Works.

One lane closed on Piʻilani Highway for shoulder work

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is advising highway users that the makai southbound lane on Pi‘ilani Highway (Route 31) in the vicinity of Keonekai Road, will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 20 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., in between milepost 5.6 and 5.8. One southbound lane will remain open for through traffic.

Drain line replacement work to begin on Honoapiʻilani Highway

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is advising highway users that work will begin next week to replace a drain line underneath Honoapi‘ilani Highway (Route 30).   

One lane closed on Puʻunēnē Avenue for Hale Pilina affordable housing site work

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is notifying the public that one southbound lane on Puʻunēnē Avenue (Route 3500) across from McDonald’s will be closed next week for utility work, for the Hale Pilina affordable housing complex.

Repair work starts on section of Haʻikū Road

Starting today, Monday, Jan. 5, 2026, a section of Haʻikū Road between Hamana Place and Līhau Place will be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday while work is underway to repair the eroding slope embankment and replace damaged guardrails, according to the County of Maui Department of Public Works.
