The Maui Planning Commission is scheduled to review land use bills regarding the proposed Hoʻonani Village project near Kahului Airport, as well as legislation regarding accessory dwelling units, agricultural retail structures and electric vehicle charging stations.

The Maui Police Department called in the Hawaiʻi Inter-Island Bomb Squad to assess reports of possible military ordnance found off of  Pūlehu Road, Wednesday afternoon.  The device was found at around 1:50 p.m. on July 30, 2025, about a quarter mile mauka of the Central Maui Landfill.

The County of Maui Department of Public Works is starting work Friday, May 16, 2025, on the installation of four speed tables on Pūlehu Road in the vicinity of the Central Maui Landfill.

A 63-year-old Kula man has been arrested and charged with first-degree negligent homicide while operating a vehicle in a negligent manner in connection with a fatal traffic collision that took the life of bicyclist Volker Weiss, 59, of Kīhei, a beloved partner, father and friend, 17 months ago.

The Maui Police Department is seeking the public’s help with any information on the whereabouts of Marina Bonofiglio, 33, of Kahului. Bonofiglio was reported missing on Sunday, Aug. 25, 2024, by a friend after she called for a ride from the area of Pūlehu Road in Kahului, approximately 0.1 mile northwest of the Central Maui Landfill at approximately 4 a.m.  Upon their arrival, Bonofiglio’s friends were unable to locate her, but they did find her personal belongings, including her cell phone, along the side of the road.  A search was conducted in the immediate area where Bonofiglio’s property was found; however, there were no signs of her, according to police.

Ameresco, Inc. is hosting a open house community meeting on Tuesday, May 7, to provide information and seek community input about its ‘Ūkiu Energy project located across from the Central Maui Landfill behind Hawaiian Electric’s Waena substation.

Maui County Council members moved quickly Friday morning to give the first of two approvals for the county to launch eminent domain condemnation proceedings in 2nd Circuit Court. The court action would help the county get legal access to a nearly 20-acre former quarry site for the final disposal of toxic ash and debris from the Lahaina wildfire.

After hearing impassioned pleas Tuesday from Lahaina wildfire survivors for quick action in a proposed eminent domain condemnation, Maui County Council members struggled to pin down the property owner on what it would take, or cost, for the county to acquire the nearly 20-acre quarry for final disposal of toxic ash and debris.

Police believe speed may be a factor in a fatal traffic collision that claimed the life of a bicyclist on Pūlehu Road in Kahului Thursday.

Pūlehu Road is now open. It was closed overnight and into Tuesday following a motor vehicle accident that knocked down a utility pole and lines across the roadway.

The National Weather Service has extended a Flash Flood Warning for the island of Molokaʻi until 9:45 p.m..

Volunteers are needed from Kula to Kahului for the Pūlehu Road cleanup on Jan. 7 on Maui.

The intersection of Pūlehu Road and Hansen Road will be converted to an all-way stop, with stop signs posted at all four entry points, effective on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022. Once the stop signs are installed, all motorists will be required to stop before proceeding through the intersection. 

Parts of Kula remain without water this evening, but could have service restored by tonight into tomorrow, barring any further breaks to water lines, according to officials with the County of Maui Department of Water Supply.

The Department of Water Supply reports another main water break affecting Upper Kula, located in the Hāpapa Gulch near Pūlehu Road. 

A motorist was sent to the hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries following a head-on collision on Hansen Road in Kahului on Tuesday morning.  Maui police say speed is suspected as a factor in the crash.

The proposed 40 MW Pūlehu Solar and Energy Storage project to be located near Pūlehu Road on Maui could provide enough clean energy to power approximately 15,000 Maui island homes.

The Maui Fire Department conducts a live fire wildland training exercise today from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. just south of Haleakalā Highway and west of Keahua Road.  

The Maui Fire Department will conduct a single day live fire wildland training exercise on Tuesday, July 7, 2020. The training will take place on a parcel of Mahi Pono land just south of Haleakalā Highway and west of Keahua Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. This is an extension of the training conducted last month.
