A brush fire has burned 33 acres (revised downward from an earlier estimate of 90 acres) in an area mauka of the Honoapiʻilani Highway near Kakaʻalaneo Drive in the Puʻukoliʻi area of Kāʻanapali near the old Sugar Cane Train warehouse. Evacuation orders have since been lifted and roads have reopened. Flight impacts have been reported.

A special blessing ceremony was held at the site of the future Olowalu Fire Station in West Maui, with groundbreaking to be announced soon, according to the West Maui Improvement Foundation.

Maui Humane Society will open its new Lahaina Pet Resource Center on Feb. 7, 2024, following a traditional Hawaiian blessing ceremony at 11 a.m. A mobile veterinary clinic event will be held following the ceremony, offering free wellness services to pets affected by the fire.

A milestone moment was reached on Wednesday as the first residential property was cleared of wildfire debris on Fleming Road in Lahaina. This comes following months of coordinated reentry activities that allowed residents to gain access to their properties and assess damage. Debris removal from residential properties in Lahaina began on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024.

Wildfire recovery work in Lahaina continues on state roadways, with progress outlined for the repair of traffic signals and guardrails, assessment of opening closed areas, the installation of an emergency stormwater capture system, and monitoring traffic impacts of emergency drain line replacement work.

The Maui County Council will meet Friday at 9 a.m. to receive testimony on ceremonial resolutions honoring Maui Firefighter Tanner Mosher for his heroism during the August 2023 wildfires and Michael Shiffler, whose nonprofit Red Lightning worked to establish satellite communications in West Maui during the emergency.

There are 115 confirmed fatalities with 54 individuals now identified publicly following notification of next of kin. EPA has completed work in Kula and has completed removal of hazardous material at 268 properties in total, which is roughly 15% of the total number of properties. Thousands of leaves on the 150-year-old Lahaina banyan tree are scorched but its multiple trunks show little sign of being singed during the Aug. 8 firestorm that devastated this historic, coastal West Maui community. 

The destructive fire in Lahaina that started 27 days ago on Aug. 8, 2023, is now 100% contained according to an update issued by the County of Maui.

County of Maui-facilitated distribution sites will be transitioning locations, times, days and focus, according to an announcement released on Tuesday evening. The sites offer food, water and supplies to people impacted by Maui wildfires. 

There are now at least three different providers actively aiding in Medical response to the needs of those in the West Maui community.

Governor Josh Green, M.D., Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Deanne Criswell and other federal officials joined together on Maui to deliver a united briefing about the Maui wildfires’ impacts and round-the-clock efforts for Maui residents and visitors.

Maui police say that in the wake of the wildfire disaster in Lahaina, the department “has been working tirelessly to coordinate a thorough and respectful body recovery operation within the affected area.”
