Maui firefighters airlift teens to safety during swift water rescue at Wailuku River in ʻĪao
The girls—ages 14, 14 and 16—became trapped by rising water at around 2:54 p.m. in an area of the river mauka of Mokuhau Park. The girls sought refuge on a large rock in the middle of the stream until Rescue 10 personnel aboard the department’s Air 1 helicopter, lifted the teens to safety.

The department reminds residents that the import, transfer, sale, or use of aerial fireworks outside of permitted displays is illegal, extremely dangerous, and punishable as a Class C felony.

Five people were displaced, including a child following a home fire on Puia Place in Makawao Friday night. The fire caused an estimated $260,000 in damage to the structure and an unknown amount of damage to the contents.

Brush fire along Honoapiʻilani in Waikapū now 75% contained
Maui fire crews are responding to a brush fire reported at around 12:22 p.m. on Saturday makai of the Honoapi’ilani near the Kahili Golf Course in Waikapū. By 1:15 p.m., crews had gained 75% containment on the fire and forward progress was stopped at around 1:50 p.m. Department officials estimate the size to be around four to five acres.
Live Fire Training scheduled for Nov. 18, 21 and 22; Training on Nov. 15 postponed due to Fire Weather Watch
The Maui Fire Department will be conducting live fire training on Nov. 18, 21 and 22 as part of its 40th recruit class. In light of the latest forecast info from the National Weather Service indicating that a Fire Weather Watch will be up for all leeward areas of all islands on Friday; the live fire training planned for this Friday, Nov. 15 has been postponed.
