A 63-year-old Kula man has been arrested and charged with first-degree negligent homicide while operating a vehicle in a negligent manner in connection with a fatal traffic collision that took the life of bicyclist Volker Weiss, 59, of Kīhei, a beloved partner, father and friend, 17 months ago.

Former Maui police officer indicted for deprivation of civil rights allegation

A former Maui police officer was arrested Tuesday on a two-count indictment for allegedly using a Taser on a member of the public without apparent legal justification, according to authorities. The indictment against Carlos Frate, 40, of Kīhei, also alleges that he falsified a police incident report with the intent to obstruct the investigation into the use of force.

United States Attorney Clare E. Connors announced that Jose Elias Camacho, 34, of Maui, was sentenced Monday by US District Judge Susan Oki Mollway to 144 months in prison for trafficking in fake oxycodone pills containing fentanyl that resulted in an overdose death.

Lānaʻi holiday turkey and rice giveaway set for Nov. 23

The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association will distribute 5-pound bags of rice on Lānaʻi as part of its annual Rice for the Holidays event, Nov. 23. The program began in 2008 when MHLA partnered with Jim Coon of Trilogy Excursions in their annual giveaway of turkeys to island residents. MHLA joined in by adding the rice to go with each turkey.
