Mokulele Airlines Completes Maui Terminal Renovation; New Kahului-Hilo 4x Daily Route

Mokulele Airlines held a blessing today, marking completion of a long-awaited facelift of its Kahului Commuter Terminal on Maui. The airline also announced brand-new daily service between Kahului and Hilo, which is set to begin on April 19, with four-times-a-day service.

March 29, 2021 COVID-19 Update: 103 Cases (52 O‘ahu, 36 Maui, 10 Hawai‘i Island, 5 Out-of-State)

The state Department of Health reports that there were 103 additional COVID-19 cases reported in Hawai‘i on Monday, including 52 on O‘ahu, 36 on Maui, 10 on Hawai‘i Island and five Hawai‘i residents diagnosed while out of state. There were a total of 1,158 cases logged over the past two weeks, 364 of them in Maui County.

$11 Million in Economic Coronavirus Relief for 5 Airports in Maui County

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Airports Division has received authorization for $11,098,912 in Coronavirus Relief and Response Supplemental Appropriations for five airports in Maui County. It’s part of a larger $46.3 million appropriation for a dozen airports across the state.

118 Sightings Recorded in 15 Minutes During Final Whale Count of 2021

On Maui, Great Whale Count site leaders collected data from 12 sites during 15-minute intervals between 8:30 a.m. and 11:50 a.m. A total of 35 whale sightings were seen during the 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. time period, the most of any time period throughout the day’s count.

Maui Island Unemployment Rate 12.7 Percent in February 2021

Unemployment on the Island of Maui was 12.7 percent in February, down from 14.1 percent the previous month, but still well above the 1.7 percent rate reported in February of last year, prior to the pandemic.

UH Study Finds 48 Percent of Hawaiʻi Families with Children Report Food Insecurity

A team of researchers at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s College of Social Sciences led a study on food insecurity for Hawaiʻi families with children. The report showed that 48% of families with children in the state are experiencing food insecurity, with 76% of families reporting that they had lost employment income due to COVID-19.

Nine year old Jayda Hansen of Kīhei, Maui was named one of 155 semifinalists in Future Engineer’s Artemis Moon Pod Essay Contest, a national competition held in collaboration with NASA, that asked K-12 students to imagine leading a one-week expedition at the Moon’s South Pole.

Overdue Boater Rescued in Waters off O‘ahu

A Navy MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter aircrew located the boater at 1:30 a.m. holding a bundle of life jackets. The aircrew hoisted the boater and transported him to Queens Medical Center due to having symptoms of hypothermia.
