HVO: Mauna Loa flow is similar to 1984 eruption; Long-term forecast discussed
“Eventually, this kind of lava flow is very similar to what happened in 1984, and could potentially threaten populated areas around Hilo. But we’re looking at somewhere around a week before we expect lava to get anywhere near that direction. We’re hoping that it will parallel the 1984 eruption and become more viscous as time goes on… hitting flatter slopes around the Saddle that slow it down,” said Hon.

Overflight at Mauna Loa shows migration of lava from summit into the Northeast Rift Zone
The first flight over the volcano was conducted at about 6:30 a.m. on Monday and it confirmed that the eruption of Mauna Loa has migrated from the summit to the Northeast Rift Zone.

The US Geological Survey Hawaiian Volcano Observatory sets the Volcano Alert Level and Aviation Color Code for volcanoes in Hawaiʻi and American Samoa. Currently, Kīlauea is erupting and is at WATCH/ORANGE, Mauna Loa is in elevated unrest and is at ADVISORY/YELLOW, and the remaining six monitored volcanoes are at NORMAL/GREEN.
