On the forecast track, the center of Erick will pass within about 200 miles south of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi later today and tonight.

Hurricane Erick continues on a track south of Hawaiʻi on Thursday night, and the latest forecast cone places Flossie near the islands with potential impacts early next week.

Erick weakened slightly overnight, back down to a category 3 hurricane, with additional weakening forecast over the next two days.

During Port heavy weather condition WHISKEY, gale force winds 39 mph are predicted to arrive within 72 hours.

While Hurricane Erick is forecast to pass south of the Hawaiian Islands and Tropical Storm Flossie approaches from the Eastern North Pacific, Mayor Michael Victorino is urging residents to be vigilant, stay informed and prepare.

Erick has become a major category 4 hurricane and has moved into the Central Pacific basin where it is being tracked from forecasters in Hawaiʻi.

Erick is expected to become a hurricane by late Monday or early Tuesday. Tropical Storm Erick is located about 1665 miles ESE of Hilo, Hawaiʻi

Deep tropical moisture associated with the remnants of Barbara will pass over the Big Island of Hawaiʻi today and tonight before diminishing.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu reported that Maui County could still receive 3 to 5 inches of rain with potential for localized flooding beginning late Sunday night and early Monday morning

Barbara has weakened to a tropical storm with winds dropping below the 74 mph threshold for hurricane status.  

Barbara is expected to degenerate into a post-tropical low by the time the cyclone moves into the Central Pacific basin.

WEST MAUI: Several homes in the 4700 to 4800 block of Lower Honoapiʻilani Highway are being evacuated due to rising waters in a nearby river. Motorists are being asked to avoid the area. Transportation officials are reporting

The National Weather Service estimates that the storm made landfall at around 9:10 a.m. near Kahakuloa on the windward coast of the West Maui Mountains, 10 miles NW of Kahului, Maui.  Forecasters say the system also made a second landfall on the island of Lānaʻi at around 9:54 a.m.

Much of Maui is closed for business on Wednesday as Maui County stands to bear the brunt of the incoming storm. Olivia has been described as an “erratic” system, shifting in track, intensity and speed over the past 24 hours. 

Effective at 6 p.m. tonight, emergency shelters will open at several locations in Maui County. All non-essential county offices will be closed on Wednesday.

All public schools and Hawaiʻi DOE offices in Maui County will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 12, and afterschool activities remain canceled for Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi.
