Jazz Maui founder seeks more music education for Valley Isle youths

Jazz Maui founder Bryant Neal has been involved in helping to organize music workshops for Maui youths for more than two decades. His latest nonprofit project is a weekly Jazz Maui venue featuring jazz artists in the Sunset Jazz Series at Maui Ku’ia Estate Chocolate Factory, including those who volunteer with students at workshops in schools. Maui Now writer Gary Kubota interviewed Neal.

Humpback Whales movie rescheduled to Old Lahaina Prison, Feb. 25

Lahaina Restoration Foundation announced that the movie Humpback Whales which was cancelled last week due to forecasted high winds, has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at a new location – the Old Lahaina Prison.

Maui’s Nuff Sedd performs at QKC’s Kamaʻāina Nights, Feb. 17

Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center features Maui’s own Nuff Sedd this Friday, Feb. 17 at Kamaʻāina Nights – a locally grown concert series for the entire ‘ohana. The live music starts at 6:30 p.m. with singer/songwriter Sunny Kalama and Nuff Sedd from 7 to 8 p.m.

Queen Kaʻahumanu Center partners with Luana Kawaʻa to teach Hawaiian language

Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center has partnered with Luana Kawa‘a of Morning Manaʻo to teach Hawaiian language to keiki and ‘ohana.  Held every third Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., Keiki Club will focus on a new theme each month with curriculum geared to share ‘ōlelo no‘eau (Hawaiian proverbs), Hawaiian vocabulary, and hands-on activities like lei making, ohe kapala, hula, mele (song) and more.

Nisei Veterans Memorial Center presents What’s New: Recent Acquisitions Exhibit

The exhibit offers a first-person glimpse of precious artifacts from World War II, gifted to the Center over the past several months.  Items include everything from a Japanese canteen from the 1942 battle of Guadalcanal, to a Japanese aircraft mechanic’s toolbox from 1941, to medals from the personal collection of Nisei Veteran Toshio Kubota (gifted to NVMC by his daughter, Valerie Matsunaga). 

Public salon series aims to elevate community and conversation 

The first of the series will be a talk story with Naomi “Sissy” Lake-Farm, Executive Director of the Maui Historical Society/Hale Hō’ike’ike at the Bailey House. She will be joined by Kelly McHugh-White of Maui Public Art Corps. Both women have been active in the Wailuku Town revitalization movement through the SMALL TOWN * BIG ART initiative.
