Hawai‘i’s COVID-19 death toll rose to 96 with the passing of two more O‘ahu residents. Details are pending release. Maui had four additional cases today, with the cumulative total rising to 367. The latest cases on Maui included one case each in Wailuku, Kahului and Lahaina, and one case in one of the outlying remote communities of Maui County.

Hawai‘i Health Department Addresses Discrepancy in Hilo COVID-19 Deaths

Non-Resident User Fees at ‘Āhihi-Kīna‘u Natural Area Reserve Start Oct. 1

3,433 Acres at Kamehamenui on Maui Acquired for Conservation
As the property has just been acquired, it is not yet open to public use. Over the coming year, DOFAW will add the property to the Forest Reserve System and will initiate consultation with the community to develop a management plan for the area.

Gov. Ige Appoints Hyun as Special Master to Assess Public Safety
Hawai’i Gov. David Ige announced Tuesday the appointment of Edmund “Fred” Hyun as the Governor’s Special Master to assist in overseeing the State Department of Public Safety. Hyun is also responsible for the investigation of concerns raised by unions regarding the department’s COVID-19 response.
De Fries is the First Native Hawaiian Appointed as CEO of Hawai‘i Tourism Authority
The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority today announced the selection of John De Fries as its new President and CEO. He replaces Chris Tatum who retired from the post on Aug. 31, 2020. Keith Regan, (formerly of Maui) HTA’s chief administrative officer, has been serving as interim president and CEO.
$27 Million In New Federal Funding Secured for Native Hawaiian Education
Hawai‘i will receive $26,992,923 in new federal funding to support grants under the Native Hawaiian Education Program. The funding was awarded to 23 Native Hawaiian educational programs across the state.
