Rep. Gene Ward today announced his retirement from the Hawaiʻi State House of Representatives due to ongoing health concerns. Ward had been in public service for more than three decades including more than 27 years working for his constituents in District 18.

The structures they once supported were severely damaged or destroyed, and the removal of approximately 232 pilings, along with other hazardous debris such as metal beams and bolts, will help eliminate safety risks in the area.

Maui County youth take part in national ‘Take Down Tobacco’ rally at state capitol

Youth advocates from across the state, including Maui and Molokaʻi, gathered at the state capitol for an annual rally to “Take Down Tobacco.”  The rally, organized by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, is held each year to combat the youth vaping epidemic. The group is calling for lawmakers to do more to protect kids and end the sale of flavored tobacco products.

Maui educator recognized for receiving National Board Certified Teacher designation

Leanne Dunn, educator of Makawao Elementary School on Maui, was among the 25 Hawai‘i educators from throughout the state who were recognized for their completion of the rigorous certification program of the National Board Certified Teacher. With the latest cohort of newly certified teachers, there are now 539 in Hawai‘i who hold this designation.
