Hawaiʻi air travelers advised to plan ahead for Thanksgiving holiday travel

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation reminds travelers to give themselves extra time at the airport this Thanksgiving holiday season in anticipation of increased passengers and limited parking at Hawai‘i’s five busiest airports. The Kahului Airport may also see an increase in travelers due to the Maui Invitational, which runs Nov. 25 through 27 at the Lahaina Civic Center.

The Plantation Course at Kapalua once again plays host to The Sentry for the PGA TOUR’s Opening Drive, Jan. 2-5, 2025.

County of Maui offices, facilities and services will be closed or modified on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2024, for the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Two tropical cyclones entered the Central Pacific Basin in late August during the 2024 Hurricane Season; season ends Nov. 30

The 2024 hurricane season featured two tropical cyclones in the Central Pacific Hurricane Center area of responsibility. Four to five tropical cyclones occur during an average year. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. The central Pacific basin extends from 140°W to the International Date Line.

Monk seal pup interactions prompt fisher and boater outreach at Honokōhau on Hawaiʻi Island

Human interactions with a recently entangled monk seal pup on Hawaiʻi Island has prompted outreach to fishers and boaters. The five-month-old female Hawaiian monk seal, named Keaka (tag number T64/T65), has been a frequent visitor to Honokōhau Small Boat Harbor in recent days.

Hannah Brown Memorial Impaired Driving Awareness Rally, Nov. 27

The sixth annual Hannah Brown Memorial Impaired Driving Awareness Rally holiday campaign gets underway this Wednesday, Nov. 27. The event begins with a youth sign-waving gathering at 4:30 p.m. at the County Building in Wailuku. That will be followed by an impaired driving checkpoint, made possible with participation from members of the Maui Coalition for Drug-Free Youth, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and family and friends of Hannah Brown.

Legislation to study designating Lahaina as National Heritage Area passes out of Energy and Natural Resources Committee

The US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee voted to advance the Lahaina National Heritage Area Study Act, legislation jointly introduced by US Sen. Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) and US Rep. Jill Tokuda (D-HI). The bicameral legislation will direct the National Park Service, in coordination with Maui County and other state and local partners, to study the suitability and feasibility of a National Heritage Area designation for Lahaina. The bill now goes to the Senate Floor for consideration.

Day 2 of Lahaina Festival features mākeke and entertainment by Kulāiwi and Kalani Peʻa

Day 2 of the Lahaina Festival takes place today (Nov. 25) with a pop-up mākeke featuring dozens of vendors from 3 to 9 p.m.; and entertainment tonight with Kulāiwi at 6 p.m., and Kalani Pe‘a featuring Hālau Ke‘alakahinano o Puna at 7 p.m.  The event is presented by the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, in partnership with the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority and the Hawai‘i Community Foundation at the Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows.  The celebration of music, culture, and community supports Maui’s resilient spirit and coincides with the Maui Invitational college basketball tournament.
