The Hawai‘i Medical Service Associationʻs Kaimana Awards & Scholarship Program will award up to 15 students throughout the state for excellence in academics, athletics, community service, healthy activities, and sportsmanship.

Maui’s accomplished big-wave surfers Paige Alms and Andrea Moller are among six total female invitees at the 34th annual Eddie Big Wave Invitational. It is the first time the women will surf alongside the men in the history of the competition at Waimea Bay that honors the memory of surfing great Eddie Aikau.

The University of Hawaiʻi Board of Regents voted unanimously to approve the renaming of the UH Mānoa Life Sciences Building after Isabella Aiona Abbott, affectionately known as the “First Lady of Limu.”  The approval came at a meeting on Jan. 19, 2023, following a groundswell of support from the campus community.

The state Department of Transportation will be conducting road work this week that will result in lane closures at various locations. Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice.  All projects are weather permitting. 

Maui County again topped other counties last month when it came to hotel average daily room rates and revenue per available room, according to data recently released by Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority.

A motor vehicle accident involving a flipped truck snarled traffic for hours along the “Pali” section of the Honoapiʻilani Highway on Saturday morning.

Dangerous large breaking waves of between 35 to 45 feet are expected along the north facing shores of Niʻihau Kauaʻi Oʻahu Molokaʻi and Maui; and surf of 20 to 30 feet is forecast along the west facing shores of Niʻihau Kauaʻi Oʻahu and Molokaʻi.

Kaunoa Senior Services’ Meals on Wheels program is looking for volunteers immediately to help deliver fresh meals directly to qualified seniors in their homes in Kahului, Wailuku and Pukalani. Volunteers are needed on various days, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and noon.

The leader Maui County’s only acute-care hospital, Maui Health CEO Mike Rembis, announced Friday that he will be retiring this spring. Despite rumors this week of Rembis’ impending departure amid deep-seated staff dissatisfaction, the leader’s decision to retire has been in the works for some time and he wants to spend more time with family, according to Maui Health spokesperson Tracy Dallarda.
