County of Maui officials are urging residents to prepare for a second kona low storm that is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to Maui County — less than a week after a powerful, prolonged kona storm caused widespread flooding and strong wind. Meanwhile, County departments are taking steps to prepare while responding to existing damages.

Advocates for houseless people say sweeps are not the long-term solution, with some residents kicked out of Maui Lani on Wednesday the same people who were booted out of Amala Place in Kahului during a previous sweep three months earlier.

Amala and Kaʻa streets, along with Kanahā Beach Park in Kahului, reopened to the public Saturday morning, July 19, 2025 following a two-day cleanup and maintenance effort by County crews.

The Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, through its Maui Strong Fund, has committed up to $8 million to help restore a vital emergency shelter and affordable housing facility in Lahaina, closing a critical funding gap for Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers Inc., one of the island’s longest-standing service providers for Maui’s unhoused.

Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers’ nonprofit Board of Directors announced the appointment of Sue R. Sadecki as the nonprofit’s new executive director. Today, the agency welcomed Sadecki on her first day at work and held a blessing ceremony at its Wailuku shelter.

More than 140 people were evacuated on Tuesday from the Westside Center shelter operated by Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers. Of those evacuated, over 25 were taken by KHAKO staff to the Wailuku shelter for emergency housing. 

The delivery of the laptops marks the beginning of the Baker Foundation’s “Computers With A Cause” program in Maui County. Another eight laptop computers will be given to deserving high school students who don’t have access to personal computers. The deadline for applications is Aug. 18, 2023.

Ibarra who submitted her resignation to accept a position as the Chief Executive Officer of the Domestic Violence Action Center on Oʻahu.

Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers announced today that Executive Director Monique R. Ibarra has resigned to assume the position of chief executive officer of the Domestic Violence Action Center on Oahu. Ibarra will succeed Nanci Kreidman, DVAC CEO and co-founder, who announced her retirement, effective June 30.

Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers announced the election of Helen “Kit” Hart as new Board Chair during the nonprofit’s annual board of directors meeting held Tuesday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

The Maui County Council will consider passage on second and final reading of the county’s fiscal year 2024 budget Tuesday. The Maui County Charter requires the council to take final action on the budget by June 10.
